UPH Design Faculty re-established Dean?s Talk on Saturday, November 29th, 2014. The event which was held in the gallery space on the 3rd floor of Building B was attended by nearly 100 participants consisting of parents and prospective students. The event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Design, Elya K. Wibowo who provided a general overview of design education in UPH. “10 years ago, students used to learn only one type of discipline, but not now. That is why, in UPH Faculty of Design, students are taught about design more thoroughly and deeply. Design is studied from various aspects. Thus, the knowledge can be applied everywhere. We should also know the professional standards and be familiar with the design industries,” said Elya to the parents and prospective students.
“In UPH, we strive to provide the best facilities and learning designed to mutually support between one course to another. Each facility provided should relate to the method of learning, learning objectives and the output from the knowledge learned. UPH Faculty of Design focus more on concentrations instead of specialization. Concentration is a collection of things that are interrelated and could be integrated into one area of expertise. The learning system at the Faculty of Design is arranged in clusters in the form of grouping subjects, so the cluster does not have to consist many kinds of subjects but should be profound,” said Elya.
“This is the power of UPH design graduates, that they can enter into various professional fields. UPH graduates are also able to compete with design graduates from any university,” added Elya.
The next presentations were delivered by each of the Head of Department. Starting from the Head of Visual Communication Design Department, Ernest Irwandi, introducing three concentrations in the Visual Communication Design major namely Cinematography, Graphic Design and Animation Design. The emphasis of each concentration is on the visual images studied from various aspects. That is why one of the requirements to enter design major is to like drawing images manually. And then, they learn how to use the devices or tools. Students will learn varying aspects of an image and must be able to explain the philosophy. The basis of design is indeed art, therefore to provide up to date knowledge, UPH regularly invites artists who are still active to give a lecture.
Interior Design Department was presented by Phebe Valencia. UPH Interior Design teaches how to think, the design process, and how a space function can be maximal for its users. After passing the first year, students will enter several concentrations, ranging from the design of residential, commercial and office, and public space. After studying all of these, students will directly be involved in practical work in the industry. On the final year, students will choose to work on 1 of the 3 final projects, which are making a project, doing internship in a consultant office or conducting a research thesis on objects they are interested in. Interior Design graduates can either become a consultant or enter into a variety of other disciplines.
Product Design Department was presented by Rio Ferdinand, Head of the Department. According to him, this discipline learn how to make a product that is useful for its users. Requirements for this course are to be creative, visionary, and capable of observing. The curriculum is designed to be completed for 3 years and 6 months, in the first year students gain the basic theory, the second to third year students will learn the fundamentals of design and all theories, up to the third year students will take a final studio and directed for entrepreneurial path. And at the fourth year, students will be directed to focus on specialization.
The last part, which was the Architectural Design Department, was presented by David Hutama, Head of the Department. He mainly explained about the student learning systems and the undertaken projects. He also reminded the heaps of tasks that should be completed by design students. Architect education teaches about process because students need to understand the whole process from starting to finishing. Early semester is supposed to be hard because students will need to face adaptation. They are taught about sense and quality of a building. In the first year, students enter workshops to learn skills. On the second, third, and fourth year, the subjects will be diverted more towards analitical.
Each department organizes a comparison study visit to universities or objects abroad. The program aims to broaden and provide inspiration and motivation to the students. Faculty of Design also has a complete and modern learning facilities. After the presentation, parents are invited to tour the labs of every department.
