Fans of the Coffee Morning Radio Heartline show got a special treat at the beginning of the year, on January 9, 2015. This time, the talk show was held off-air at Books and Beyond bookstore located on the campus of UPH Lippo Village, Karawaci. The event was hosted by Jose Marwan and Dina Virgy, presenting three speakers including: Fadjroel Rahman (Political researcher and observer), Prof. Alexius Djemadu (International Relations observer, UPH Social and Political Sciences) and Radityo Fajar Arianto, MBA. (Economic observer, Business School UPH).
While from the economic aspect, fundamentally, Indonesian?s economic is currently increasing and quite well-controlled. “Compared to the other states in the ASEAN region, the Indonesian economy is relatively good. It is even predicted that in a few years, Indonesia will take the 7th place in world economic power. The debts are pretty well-controlled. This condition is good for investors. The populist economic policies by President Joko Widodo received a positive response from investors, as long as the government can prove that they can manage it well. A strong populist economy can actually support a country’s economy in crisis situations,” said Radityo.
From the aspect of international relations, Prof. Aleksius conveyed three important things that must be anticipated by Indonesia; the first is related to the shift in economic power to Asia Pacific with the rise of China. This should be viewed by Indonesia as an opportunity, therefore Indonesia should take advantage of its relationship with China, from Asean and also its bilateral path. Second, Indonesia must anticipate the implementation of AEC, given that Indonesia has a 40% market share of ASEAN. In response to this, Joko Widodo?s government should pay attention to the main elements of national competitiveness, good governance, good infrastructure, and domestic connectivity between islands. The third is regarding security, where Indonesia should be aware of its uniqueness and transform it into its soft power.
100-days of Joko Widodo?s ruling was also raised in this talk show. According to Fadjroel, public can evaluate the changes that occur, referring to the ideals of the new government. Witnessing the rapid reaction of the government to serve its people, he was optimistic with the government of Joko Widodo. “This shows a positive effort from the government,” he said.
From the aspect of economic policy, Radityo was also optimistic with the rural development program which is being implemented by the government. “This program requires the attraction, especially for the village, and it has been done by the government. However, it should also be supported by rules that will protect the local economy. Furthermore, strategic evaluation is needed,” he explained.
From the international relations perspective, according to Prof. Aleksius, Indonesia is in a very unique position, arguably trouble-free. Indonesia is in a position to bring together the major powers. It can be used for political stability in Indonesia.
All three speakers agreed that Indonesia has hope. Indonesian government under the reign of Joko Widodo is capable and is ready to face the challenges and opportunities ahead. (rh)
