Parents? role in determining the success of their children in the future does not stop when entering college years. Universitas Pelita Harapan saw the importance of providing lectures-related information to parents of students and inviting the cooperation of parents to keep monitoring and guiding their children. To that end, UPH Student Life Department devised a Parents Gathering program since 2013. This program includes a meeting of the parents and faculty leaders, ranks rectorateand founder of UPH, a consultation with academic supervisors and a togetherness event. This semester, Parents Gathering was held on February 28, 2015, with the theme “Be There”, whichwere delivered directly by UPH Founder, Dr. (Hon) James T. Riady.

In his presentation, James T. Riady explained the importance of parents? presence in the process of a child?s identity formation and development. Today, many parents are passive and are not involved enough in the lives of their children. James called it a ‘silent Adam’. In fact, the process of a child’s identity formation and development desperately needs the presence of parents because the relationship between parents and their children can strengthen identity. Thus, the child will be able to face influences from society and values from his surrounding. Parents are the value reference adopted by a child. Therefore, it is important for parents to have true standard values, which is through the Word of God.

One cause of dysfunction in a family is the ‘silent Adam’, but it does not necessarily mean that responsibility falls on the husband only. The wife is also important to support her husband in educating a child. Furthermore, he mentioned a ?5 + 1? factor that parents need to consider in forming a child?s identity. The first is that the identity of a child is formed by how the child see his/her parents. Second, the benchmark for a child?s academic field must be adjusted to his/her capacity. Another factor is the physical needs, such as the appearance of the child. Fourth, parents need to pay attention on the surrounding communities. Fifth, guiding a child to know what he/she will become in the future is crucially needed. The last is to educate the child to become religious in order for him/her to be able to stand firm in the right path in the midst of this dilapidated world. At the end of his presentation, James insisted that a good education is a blend of three foundations, they are family, schools and worship places.

On this occasion, parents had the opportunity to meet and consult with faculty leaders or lecturers according to the majors taken by their children. The questions asked by parents included the scoring system, scholarship program and tuition. “I feel that there are some miscommunications between me any my child regarding payment matters, the increase in parking fee and other programs. But through this meeting, I gain a clear information about my child?s education matters”, said Mrs. Yeti, parent of Naomi, Faculty of Medicine 2014.

“The purpose of this meeting is very good, often times parents think that they can simply release their children, this is precisely the point of failure. In addition, the importance of parents? role in the children’s education should also be appealed to the students. Low GPA is also another problem, perhaps due to the transitional period or other causes. Through an event like this, Faculties can also help provide a solution to parents in guiding their children to be able to successfully undergo lectures,” explained Grace, Director of Administration Business School.

This meeting was responded very positively by the parents. Many questions and feedbacks were submitted. “The event is great, because we can express the obstacles weare experiencing. What was delivered by Mr. James is also very useful for us parents to be able to observe and guide our children better. Through this opportunity, we as the parents can also submit suggestions and we hope there will be actions done by UPHregarding the complaints and feedback from us“, said Mrs. Ristiana, one of the students? parent.
