He believes Christian education develops not only one?s brain but also one?s heart and talent. For this reason, many parents register their children in Christian schools or universities.

Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa (BEM), the student executive council of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), held their annual leadership training summit entitled: Advanced Leadership Training (ALT) 2015, with the tagline ?Stand Up, Stand Out, Stand Firm.? This tagline was chosen based on the belief that young people these days are apathetic, less active, stubborn, and hard to be developed. ?Stand Up means that the participants should be better developed, Stand Out refers to creativity. It is important to have critical thinking skills as well as being creative to overcome things. Lastly, Stand Firm means when students are facing problems, they are expected to be able to survive under any circumstances,? explained Siagian Sidarta (Industrial Engineering 2013), the Head Committee of ALT 2015.

ALT 2015 targeted the 2014 cohort of students and was held in 2 different sessions. The first session took place on March 7, 2015, on the UPH main campus. The session was comprised of 3 lessons: explaining the tagline; the Heart of Leadership, which emphasized character building, and lastly a lesson explaining each organization that exists at UPH. BEM and Student Life representatives delivered those lessons. The participants were then given a homework assignment to plan and design an organization complete with vision, mission, and all the details of program planning which will then be presented at Meeting 2 on March 13-15 2015 at UPH and Gunung Pancar, Bogor. This location was chosen so that the participants could survive outside their comfort zones.

The simulation concept used by the 2015 ALT planning committee was the first of its kind held by BEM, UPH, and each participant was obliged to perform at a highly intense level of discipline. As many as 120 participants, including the committee members, had to suffer consequences if there were mistakes made. This event hopefully granted the participants the benefit of being an organizer as well as learning how to survive outside of their comfort zones. This event was also expected to develop the leaders of various UPH student organizations such as BEM, Majelis Perwakilan Mahasiswa (MPM), and Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa (UKM).

?In the future, I hope ALT will put more emphasis on strictness and discipline, because the students these days tend to be more timid and not resilient,? closed Siagian, who had prepared ALT 2015 since August 2014 with his various planning subcommittees. (el/an)
