Law School of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) received an honor as the host of international training held by PILnet, a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in New York, United States of America. PILnet is an organization with the mission to build a global network to activate, empower, and connect those who use legal tools in the public interest. The key strategies of PILnet to achieve the mission are through skill-building workshop, pro bono projects which bridge the gap between lawyers seeking opportunities to provide legal help and those who need it, and legal aid and education for key stakeholders and law schools. This training also partnered with Baker & McKenzie, a global law firm with affiliations in every country, one of them is Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners (HHP) in Indonesia.
The training was held on 27-30 April 2015 in two different locations, UPH Karawaci and HHP, Sudirman, Central Jakarta. The participants are 25 students from UPH Law School who have been selected by a competitive process carried out by UPH Law School and HHP.
The first day of training was opened by Rector of UPH, Dr. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, Daru Lukiantono (Partner HHP Indonesia) and Edwin Rekosh (PILnet President, USA). In his opening remark, the Rector stated his hope for the UPH Law School students to be the Lawyer of Integrity. Moreover, President and CEO of PILnet, Edwin Rekosh explained that this training was a pro bono strategy of PILnet in which the lawyer could engage more in the social issues concerning the legal ethics, and hoped that the participants could be inspired by the legal practitioners who perform legal ethics. PILnet also stated his reason of choosing HHP as the partner for this training since HHP was representative as the positive role model of law firm in Indonesia.
In this training, HHP gave trainings which focused on the legal practices in Indonesia. Each training session was done in the same format that consisted of short lectures of certain topics and the participants were further divided into small groups to solve the cases of legal practices. The topics of training were anti-corruption, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, and other key issues. Furthermore, this program also discussed thoroughly about the role of lawyers, rule of law, and how to assist the clients. For the introduction to legal ethics session was opened specially by Kathleen Clark, a Research Professor in Washington University School of Law in United States of America who is also a lawyer. She was accompanied by Mohammad Fachri, HHP Indonesia partner.
The importance of ethics for legal practitioners was emphasized by Edwin to the participants. ?The stronger legal ethics could create a better life through the right implementations of legal itself,? stated Edwin who is also a lecturer in law at Columbia Law School and the award receiver of American Bar Association?s International Human Rights in 2009.
The participants of the training hopefully could understand the actual legal practices and what they will face daily in regard to the legal ethical issues. ?The profession as lawyers is no different from other professions in service industry where they need to handle clients with trust. Being a lawyer is indeed a noble profession if it is done rightly and not abusing the law itself. The point is a lawyer should be humble to the clients,? explained Mochammad Fachri, HHP Indonesia partner who is also the member of Perhimpunan Advokat Indonesia (PERADI).
At the end of the training, PILnet will choose two best students to join 2015 Asia Pro Bono Forum, 23-24 June 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand. (el) |
