Monday, 18 May 2015 – UPH Department of International Relations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Centre for Policy Planning and Development for International Organization of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The signing marks the commencement of research project by UPH Department of International Relations with support from Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this research, UPH Department of International Relations cooperating with UPH Center for International Trade and Investment (UPH CITI) to enhance the output of the research.
Topic chosen by both institutions is “Performance of Economic Diplomacy: Evaluation of Trade and Investment Agreements”. This topic will cover issues in Indonesia’s today agenda such as The Challenge of Economic Diplomacy in 21st Century; Main issues on International Trade such as food security, environmental goods, Investor-State Dispute Settlement; and in the end will conclude a policy recommendation for Indonesia in aligning its policies on trade and investment issues.
“This research is very important in order to get an input for Indonesia’s foreign policy, especially in trade and investment. Currently, Indonesia has been heavily criticized and threatened by countries due to Indonesia’s plan to freeze or terminate some treaties and agreements. Many of our agreements have clauses that only benefit Indonesia’s counterpart, but sometimes it is harmful for Indonesia”, said Mr. Fikry Cassidy ? the Head of Centre for Policy Planning and Development for International Organization. Prof. Aleksius Jemadu ? Dean of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UPH in turn said, “It is true that we need foreign investment to develop a country. However, most of the time companies only come to Indonesia to gain profit, and this is inevitable. We need to balance the situation in order to benefit both the investor and Indonesia. We will try to find a solution for this problem through this research.” This research will be due in November, and there will be a Focus Group Discussion and a public seminar of the result of this research.
Mr. Fikry Cassidy (Head of Centre for Policy Planning and Development for International Organization), Ms. Joevi Roedyati, Mr. Partogi Samosir, and Mr. Bramantya D.
