UPH as a Christian educational institution underlines the holistic education based on the vision of ?True Knowledge, Faith in Christ, Godly Character?. Based on its vision, UPH emphasizes on the balanced and integrated education, which comprises of arts, science, and technology, as well as a strong spiritual value.

Spiritual formation for students is a program managed by Maryan R. Garcia, Director of Spiritual for Student Formations (SFS) and directed by the Chaplain Office, Albert Mitchell Moore, to prepare students to be impactful leaders in the community and church. One program that is held to realize that purpose is an annual training conference. That program was initially held on 22-23 May 2015, entitled Worship Training Conference 2015, which was held at Grand Chapel UPH. The purpose of this event is to give Biblical training as to what worship is and the foundation God?s Word provides for our leadership. There were more than 1000 participants, such as students and staffs of UPH, joined in this event.

According to Chaplain Moore, this training is truly important to guide and prepare the students who will be future leaders. ?The Lord has entrusted UPH with hundreds of gifted, young, leaders who will graduate and influence their communities and churches through worship leadership. As a Chaplain Office we want to steward the student’s time at UPH through training and worship was the chosen topic for this,? he explained.

On the first day, this training was led by Pdt. Jimmy Setiawan, Founder and Director of Mentoring Center for Worship Renewal, who discussed about the essence of worship. In his lesson, he explained several important points of worship, such as, what is worship, why worship God and how we should worship God. He mentioned 5 aspects that should be applied in the worship, such as spirit, structure, style, skill, strategy. Every man was created to worship God. A kind of worship that God desires is in spirit and truth. Therefore, Pdt. Jimmy emphasized that worship must come from the heart that is directed to God.

The second day session was delivered by Dr. Timothy Cronkling, a World Religion lecturer at FLA UPH who also teaches in the Conservatory of Music UPH. He taught and trained the participants to apply the practical method to lead the praise properly in the worship. In this session, Dr. Tim asked for several participants to simulate the worship on stage and he evaluated them after.  The simulation consisted of the use of hand gestures to guide or lead the congregation in the worship, the clarity in saying words, the songs mastery, and the coherency with the music team.

This two-day training ran smoothly and also received positive feedbacks from the participants. Moore, as the advisor of this program, expressed his joyfulness, ?This year was a huge success. Everyone who joined our first annual worship training conference was equipped with a robust Biblical Theology of worship while empowered with practical tools for worship leadership. Our committee did a fantastic job and our speakers could not have been better. I thank the Lord for His pleasure to be present with us during the conference and I pray for His pleasure to use it for His purposes,? said Moore.

Through this training the students will be better equipped for leading worship and have a deeper understanding of worship and how to lead the worship based on the Biblical principles. This training is not solely useful for the worship leaders but also for each individual to worship properly either personally or devotions in campus, faculty, community or church. (rh/el)
