On Wednesday, January 13, 2016, UPH received a visit from representatives of University of Waterloo (UW) to the Department of Applied Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology (FAST) UPH. This visit is part of the implementation of READI Project which is Risk Management Economic Sustainability and Actuarial Science Development in Indonesia. The team of UW consists of Nello Angerilli (READI Project Director), Colin Rankin, Mike Eden, Kerry Mahoney, Ken Seng Tan, Michael Wong and Sri Mastuti, consultant for READI-IGEA. The group was received by a representative of UPH including Helena Margaretha (Vice Dean FaST), Andry Panjaitan (Director FAST), Kie Van Ivanky Saputra (Chairman of the Department of Applied Mathematics), Silvy Santoso (Vice Director of Marketing and Admission) and Johana Suprapto (International Office Manager).
Department of Applied Mathematics UPH has held actuarial specialization program since 2005. Many graduates of this program successfully work as an actuary. Cooperation with the University of Waterloo will strengthen the quality of actuarial specialization program at UPH, in particular towards international certification and international quality standards. UPH is the only university in Indonesia which has gained recognition from VEE Applied Statistics from the Society of Actuaries (SOA).
This visit is the continuation of the Canadian government representative visit to Indonesia in the context of the sustainability of actuarial science education in Indonesia, in November 2015 ago. Topics discussed during the visit of University of Waterloo this time is around a common strategy in the socialization and recruitment of students with interest in actuarial specialization is one of the subjects of the Mathematics Department at UPH. In the discussion was also discussed about the internship program for actuarial students, marketing the program to prospective students to the field of actuarial and general information regarding the interest of the people of Indonesia to actuarial science. Discussions are also associated with the potential for cooperation that can be done between the UW and the UPH as the internship program, in cooperation with the financial industry and insurance, outreach programs of students and teachers of high school, competition, socialization program actuary to prospective students and parents as well as a program of further studies for lecturers,
After discussion, the UW team is invited to visit the class and directly dialogue with students of Mathematics about the internship program, motivation in selecting actuarial specialization and gender issues related to the actuarial field. Before ending the visit in UPH, the UW team also had the opportunity to visit the UPH College, located on the campus of UPH Karawaci. UW team introduces actuarial science in general to the students and teachers as well as dialogue about students’ interest towards actuarial science. (rh/mf)
