On January 30, 2017, a collaborative journal of researchers from University of Tunis, Tunisia; Technopole de Borej-Cedria, Tunisia; and Universit? di Catania, Italia was published. The journal itself talks about a solar cell made from natural dye and its improved performance with ZnO nanoparticles. The journal was published in Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology by Beilstein Institut of Frankfurt, Germany with Impact Factor 2,778. Surprisingly, the said journal cited an International Conference Journal which was written by a student of UPH Electrical Engineering which entitles ?Fabrication and Characterization of Dye-sensitized Solar Cell using Blackberry Dye and Titanium Dioxide Nanocrystals? (DOI: 10.1109/ACT.2010.46). The journal was written by Stephen L. Tanihaha (2006) and his supervisors, Dr. Henri Uranus and Jessie Darma, M. Eng. in 2010. The journal was presented by Stephen himself at The 2010 Second International Conference on Advances in Computing, Control, and Telecommunication Technologies (ACT 2010), Jakarta, on December 2-3, 2010.

When a journal is cited it is a sign of exceptional visibility and that it has been read and approved by an academic community. Searches through Google Scholar shows that the journal has been cited for a few times before too. It was stated that Stephen?s journal has been cited for 8 times, such as by a Journal in Current Applied Physics (Elsevier, Impact Factor 2,144) in 2015, International Journal of Sciences and Techniques of Automatic Control & Computer Engineering (Published in Tunisia) in 2015, Journal of Chemistry (Hindawi, Impact Factor 0,996) in 2013 and a doctoral dissertation, published in Malaysia in 2012.

Dye-sensitized Solar Cell with Blackberry Dye Created by a student of UPH Electrical Engineering

The journal that Stephen and his supervisors was a report of his research for his Final Assignment, in which he made a dye-sensitized solar cell with natural dye extracted from a blackberry with an addition of nano TiO2. With such simple devices, Stephen has successfully created solar cell with 0,196% efficiency, with Voltage at Open Circuit (VOC) 192 mV, short circuit 27 ?A and fill factor 29,88%. The characterization for the solar cell was done with a simple self-made simulator. Although the result was still far from perfect, but it is the first solar cell made in UPH.

Stephen who has graduated in 2010 is currently working in Huawei Technologies, a renowned multinational company in telecommunication, as a Project Manager.
