SISTech (School of Information Science and Technology) UPH continues to keep up with the latest information technology development, in cooperation with various technology-based companies. Developments within SISTech UPH continue to be socialized not only to students but also to high school students to get a direct insight into technology trends from SISTech industry partners through various events. One of them is SISTech Open Day ‘Learn from The Tech Giants’ which took place Wednesday, November 8, 2017.

SISTech Open Day presents Doni Nathaniel CEO of Office-Strategic Development from Tokopedia and Alex Albert Principal Software Development EngineerBlibli.com. Besides students, this event was attended by approximately 300 high school students from Jakarta and Tangerang.

According to Lie Nathanael Santoso, Executive Director of UPH Business Development, this event aims to equip students and students with insight into technological developments. Through this event also SISTech UPH want to introduce new interest that is technopreneurship and smart apps development.

“Thus they can get the latest information directly from the big technology-based industry players in Indonesia, such as Tokopedia and Blibli.com that we present today,” added Nathanael.

In the presentation session, Doni Nathanael provides insight on the application of technological advancements that spawned a variety of applications to support customer convenience and how technological advances can be a problem solver.

“The technology-based applications which currently exist and continue to grow are the ‘distractions’ that become a nuisance to what’s already in. Change the conventional way so it becomes much easier as we currently use. Like Tokopedia and other similar applications is an application that changes the style of communication and transaction. This arises from the appearance of a problem and how the technology actors see it as an opportunity, become a solver, and develop it into a business, “said Doni.

Facing the technological developments that continually present according to Doni also must be balanced with the educational process to the community, and aware of the various challenges that exist to be transformed into opportunities.

“Facing this technology, we must also realize the reality that exists. There are currently 115 million internet users, but only 12 million are online shop users. Other facts in Indonesia there are still about 75% of people who do not have a bank account, while currently buying and selling transactions on the applications online require customers who have bank accounts to transfer. This is a challenge, how people who have not utilized the technology yet are a great opportunity as a target for our consumers. We also must be aware, besides challenges; there are also a lot of key drivers that are able to support the development of technology applications. This is among other things the price of smartphones and Internet quota prices are also increasingly cheaper, thus allowing various layers of society who have the opportunity to access these technology applications. Another element is the half of population in Indonesia is millennials. Millenials is a digitally native generation or in other words, savvy who later are able to move the direction of technological development, “said Doni at the end of the session.

After the session from Tokopedia, the exposure was continued by Alex from blibli.com to provide an explanation of a career path in the world of technology.

According to Alex, talk about a career in technology there is two paths. First, from the management side. Generally, the career is a senior engineer, manager, senior manager, until finally occupies a position as CEO. In general, the focus is on social skills in the ability to manage people, able to be an overseer (overseer) to as a strategic planner, administrative, leadership, and an extensive knowledge. Second, related to the expertise path.

“This area of expertise is still not owned by many companies. Expertise means emphasizing certain skills. One of them is a principle, like me and my friends at blibli.com. Currently, in blibli there are only 4 people who are at the principle level. We can say that principle equal to the manager level. If the management area is more about the social skills, then in the area of expertise or principle emphasizes the technical ability. A person on this path certainly has a high technical skill. They must also have the technical insight and ability, meaning not only technical skills but also insight and understanding with various technological details, able to understand the technical details from the bottom line. The expertise is also required to understand the field of industry where he works, “explained Alex.

At the end of the session, Alex also reminds when the students have to set the choice of the chosen majors until they are ready to work, he reminds to looking for companies which have vision and values which are in line with what we seek. Alex advised to achieve the dream then the willingness to learn is needed.

Through this event, high school students are expected to gain insight and better understand what technology-based applications that can be useful. (mt)

We see how the situation in the industry world today and focus on the technology, because children are all using technology but they do not understand what is behind it, and how the process. For them the technology is simple, just have a mobile phone and so on. But from today they understand that technology is complex and important to be learned. Hopefully it can be a motivation.

I also think this event is important and good for the program; many university programs should make a lot of event like this. Because I think a lot of high school students are still confused, I am as a teacher usually facing their confusion about what majors they want to choose.

This opportunity is very good. I hope in the future is even better, especially with the current online registration from UPH which is very easy. Especially since I used to be an alumnus of UPH and felt the complicated way of the registration. But now students can easily register.

Today’s show is interesting because I get a lot of new information, new idea. Now if we talk about technology and applications, we are not confused. Previously I do not have a special interest about technology, but now since the new information we are driven to find out.
