? ?Without grammar, very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed? (Wilkins D.A. 1972. Linguistics and Language Teaching). Quoted by Dr. Hananto, S.Pd. MA., in ?Introducing VocCom, a New Vocabulary Game in Town?, was held on Friday, 9th July 2010 at UPH ? Karawaci. This event was mostly attended by English teachers from high schools and lecturers from several universities in Jakarta. Research has shown that students in high school especially in Indonesia tend to have a low vocabulary (less then 3000 words). No wonder most of them are less capable to communicate in English. While in Indonesia, teachers are more concern and putting an enhancement on the grammar more than focusing on the vocabulary knowledge. Starting?with these facts, Dr. Hananto, who is currently the Head of English Education Department in Faculty of Education UPH, conducted a research in creating a software contained a vocabulary question bank.? The software consists of 41.632 words originated from 2.602 words in 16 formats. It could be used for teaching, learning, and also creative vocabulary game which is easy and fun. ?VocCom (vocabulary competition) is one of the applications in this software? said Dr. Hananto. The purpose of this event is to encourage the students in managing to memorize more vocabulary words. This game will be held in UPH Festival 17, from 12-14 August 2010 in UPH ? Karawaci. ?This kind of game will be competed in UPH Festival and it is the first ever new kind of game in Indonesia,? he added. Dr. Hananto took that as an opportunity to the participant to view the work of the software. He hopes this competition can be a routine one in UPH Festival. ?The most important is that the teachers could use this software and further more they can pursue their students to learn their vocabulary more.? FIP UPH is now giving a purpose to DIKTI in order to develop and validate this software. Dr. Hananto hoped that this software can be a supporting tool for teaching and learning of English in the Indonesian curriculum. (ros) UPH Media Relations? ? |
