Opening speech of Dean’s Talk by Yonathan Aditya Ph.D., Dean of Psychology UPH

On October 3, 2015, UPH held the event Dean’s Talk of the Faculty of Psychology, which was held in the 4th floor of HOPE building. This event is still in Dean’s Talk series to introduce faculty and programs of existing studies at UPH to parents and prospective students.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology, Yonathan Aditya Ph.D., gives appreciation for the presence of the parents, indicating thoughtfulness for children’s education. He also gave a little review about UPH that emphasize holistic education with the vision and mission of True Knowledge, Faith in Christ and Godly Character. This makes the learning of Psychology at UPH differ with other Faculty of Psychology at different Universities even other Christian Universities.

The difference lies not in the theories or materials provided, but the directing to a Christian perspective in understanding the theory. “Most theories of psychology are discovered or created by atheist figures, who do not know God. Therefore, we tried to challenge the thinking of students, about how if this psychological theory will be viewed from a Christian perspective, how do we, as Christians respond to it. So there is no dichotomy of thinking, which distinguishes the spiritual and secular life,” said Yonathan.

Furthermore, regarding the detail of the Faculty of Psychology presented by the chairman of the Department of Psychology, Kartika Sitorus, M.Psi. She added that the review performed by Yonathan, does not mean Psychology of UPH does not provide pure material or psychological theories, but the faculty actually enrich students with a new perspective so that students can think critically. “For Christian students, we direct them to see from a Christian perspective, but for students of non-Christians, we direct them to look at the theory or science of the human being as a whole from the perspective of their beliefs, teaching them to think more critically,” said Kartika.

According to Kartika, with this method, the hope is that graduates of UPH Psychology will be an individual to grow in faith, have high moral integrity, understand the concepts and theories of psychology holistically in the context of universal and local, and have the spirit to work and contribute to human welfare. The field of psychology that will be discussed during the lectures is Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Counseling Psychology and Psychology of Mental Development. Psychology students will complete the course within 3-3.5 years and earn a title of Bachelor of Psychology (S.Psi).

About 30 parents and students attended the event Dean’s Talk and gave a positive response to the very active question and answer sessions.

Film Screening for 500 high-school students

At the same time, at the 5th floor of Hope building, Faculty of Psychology in collaboration with the Department of Marketing UPH organizes film analyzing for the five schools which is, SMAK 6 BPK Penabur, SMA Kristen Yusuf, School of Cinta Kasih Tzu Chi, School of Santa Patricia and School of Dian Harapan Cikarang. Movie analysis began with an aptitude test and was followed by the screening of the film The Science of Happiness – An Experiment in Gratitude. This film tells the story of a Scientist conducting experiments on the Science of Happiness to five people, starting with a test to measure happiness for each person, and then asking them to give the name of the most influential people in their lives, writes down what their influences are into a piece paper, then ask them to call the person and read what they write in a paper to that person. After the call, the reaction of these people is diverse, some are crying, some are smiling, laughing, relieving and some are silent. Then, before they go home, the scientist asks them to go through the test of happiness with different questions than the first test. As a result, there are people that have their happiness level increased from 2% to 4%, and the happiness that is added to the feeling of gratitude increased from 4% to 19%.

Film analysis was hosted  by Riryn Sani, Lecturer of UPH Psychology

Film analysis was hosted by UPH Psychology lecturer, Riryn Sani. She described some things from this movie, which it shows that happiness can be measured, “as you did previously also aptitude test,  interests, talents and happiness are things that are not visible, so with psychology we can measure something that can?t be seen like IQ, human feelings (EQ) and other matters related to humans,” said Riryn. Furthermore, in that short video before there are some emotions that arise when they are asked to call the person, such as surprised, happy, smiling, sad, and some are reluctant to call, but eventually did, “this is because as humans have a tendency to follow the orders of another person or a tendency to ‘obey’. This happens in the tragedy of Adolf Hitler, the Nazi. So, in Psychology later, more or less these things are what we learn about “said Riryn.

Film analysis that was attended by about 500 students from 5 schools got a very good response. Many students were actively asking questions about the Faculty of Psychology and also UPH. (FC/MF)
