Collaboration among students can support the lecture process, especially for the new students. This is disclosed by Wulan Meiaya Wowor, STPPH Hotel Management Lecturer, responding to the ‘Hotel Gathering 2017’ held by the Management Student Association of Pelita Harapan Tourism School (HMMP-STPPH) on 6 and 7 October 2017.
“With the intimacy that exists between senior and junior students, will make it easier for them to collaborate. The juniors can also ask their seniors if there are difficulties, otherwise, seniors can help juniors when facing the constraints of the lectures. Not only that, collaboration can also be done between students and senior alumni. Therefore, in this gathering hotel event, the alumni also present to give an overview of study experience and work experience in the hospitality industry, so students can build a networking, as well as gain insight when seeing the connection between science and practice in the real industry, “explains Wulan.
Hotel Gathering event is an annual HMMP program to welcome new students. The program that was supposed to be held at the beginning of the academic year was forced to withdraw from the schedule because of the lecture that had to be run. However, considering the importance of the program, HMMP continues to implement with entertaining and educational activities such as introduction of rules and codes of conduct which are applicable to the courses of Hospitality Management, the introduction of the clubs of student management activities, the introduction of the industrial world, sharing experience from alumni as well as various games to bond the team.
This event is held by students from 4th and 10th semesters. And also the lecturers are present to bring the idea on how to succeed in a career in the field of hospitality. Students are also invited to explore passion in serving others through their scientific field. The first day of the new students was introduced to the student organization HMMP department, and clubs under the HMMP such as Gastronomy, Mixology, and Baker and Patissier, and interspersed with the game of togetherness. The second day they were introduced to senior careers in the hospitality industry and invited practitioners from industry partners to open new students’ insights.
This activity proved to be effective for building good relationships among students. Marsela, 4th-semester student who is also active as a Mentor, admitted “This event makes me know that there are clubs which can be followed based on our interests. I also get more familiar with my friends and seniors. Through good relationships between seniors and junior, they can help me when facing difficulties.” (rh)
