There are smart in terms of exact sciences, there are also great in playing music. But our society already gives stamp that smart kids are the ones who get good grades in the field of exact sciences only.

Indonesian expert on multiple intelligences, Munif Chatib, gave thorough presentation on human intelligence. He presented it in a seminar organized by Faculty of Medicine Universitas Pelita Harapan and Department of Health entitled “Revealing the Brain Secret to Increase Intelligence” on Monday (29/03) at St. Moritz Grand Ballroom, Jakarta.

Munif began his presentation by asking, “What is the function of a school? Educating the so called not intelligent right? Therefore schools should not supply entrance tests for students. The indicator should only be the number of seats. Whenever the seats are all occupied, the registration may be closed.”

So that is how schools should be run, accepting the unintelligent, intelligent, hyperactive, and even the physically handicapped students. “I’ve been practicing it. There was a student in my class that in the 7th grade he lost his confidence because of his handicapped leg, but in the 9th grade he joined a physics Olympic,? he said, followed by big applause from the audience.

He emphasized to the seminar participants consisted of educators that the most important thing is not ?the best input? but instead ?the best process?. ?We should try our best to discover their abilities. Eventhough our inputs might not be the best ones, but when we are able to discover their potentials and process them well, then we?ll end up with the best outputs,? he said.

This whole thing could be started from small things such as giving children an appreciation on what they do. “For instance, when our children draw something not as good as we expect, we still need to praise them as such ‘oh it?s good, dear’. Because if you automatically consider their work bad, over time they will loose their self confidence,? said Munif.

Finally he concluded on the importance of identifying children?s intelligence. “Because only by knowing their competencies, we can always put the right man on the right place. As parents we should not insist our own wills so that our children excel in certain areas, let them choose freely,” he said as he?s closing the presentation. (cyn)
