Share the joy was the project recently held by UPH students together with cancer pediatric patients who stayed in Rumah Kita II, at Anggrek Neli Murni Road A/110, Slipi, West Jakarta. Under the direction of the UPH Service Learning Community (SLC), a total of 20 students from various majors participated in this project.
According to Oscar Benyamin, UPH Food Technology student from batch 2007 as head of the project, ?This event is held based on the awareness of many people around us that less fortunate than us. So, now we would share the joy with them. Besides, literature claimed that kid with cancer not only can be cured medically but also psychologically. With positive support, their immune systems will increase. So, we decided to do a service for cancer pediatric patient,? said Oscar.
The students were asked to make a variety of programs to entertain the kids with cancer. The activities include coloring, games and other entertainments. There are 12 children, toddlers and teenagers, involved in this event. They seemed to be enthusiastic and excited with the arrival of UPH student.

The parents were given a briefing and counseling by a counselor Mundhi Word Hardiningtyas, Spd., MA. Counseling group entitled ?Cancer Pediatric Patients Assistance? started with the sharing from parents about the history of their children?s cancer disease. Mundhi said that there were two major things that should be recognized by parents. First, that their children?s disease affects all aspects of their lives (physical, mental, social, and spiritual) and also they must recognize all of the symptoms or psychological impact being experienced by their child.

Neti is Vita?s mother (4 years old) who suffered Retinoblastoma (eye cancer) since she was 2 years old. At first, she was afraid and worried when she knew her daughter had cancer. However, after staying for eight months at Rumah Kita II, Neti was fully supported by this shelter home. She was also grateful for this UPH SLC event, because she and her only daughter received a lot of support and also were entertained.
This event was part of CSR events from UPH SLC. At UPH, students learn not only by having classes at campus, but also in the community to develop their characters.

In service learning, student learn how to develop awareness for the environment, solve problems in the community, deal with people and get experiences that shape their interpersonal skills, work in teams and many more. Service learning also makes academic content more alive as students apply their knowledge and skills to real-life situations. Students will be more engaged in their studies and also make a positive impact for the community.

The event was held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 was the result of collaboration between UPH SLC with Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia-YKAKI (Indonesian Care for Cancer Pediatric Patients Foundation). The Foundation was founded by the parents of patients and sympathizers who care for children with cancer and now has several shelter homes for children with cancer.

The three-hour event was welcomed by Ingrid Lolita (Coordinator Rumah Kita II). Inggrid said that she was very grateful for the presence of UPH students who shared their love with children and parents in these shelter homes. Inggrid also hoped this event will be organized again in the future. (pty)
