Twenty Professional Architects Appointed as Reviewers at Final Project Exhibition of UPH Architecture Students.

Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Architecture Study Program (Prodi) appointed twenty professional architects to review more than two hundred final projects of UPH Architecture students. The reviewed works were results of mandatory Architecture, Basic Studio, Architecture Design Studio 1, Architecture Design Studio 3, and Architecture Design Studio 5 courses. The works were exhibited at the Gedung B gallery located at UPH Lippo Village campus from 3 to 6 December 2019.

Of the twenty professional architects, there were renowned names such as Astrid Susanti – Principal of SAIA Architecture, Joe Willendra – Principal of WOFF Architecture, Cahyo Candrawan – Principal of Pavilion95, Willis Kusuma – from Willis Kusuma Architect (WKA), and Ardy Hartono – Co-founder of Dua Studio.

Alvar Pradian Mensana, S.T., M.Arch. – Head of UPH Architecture Prodi, explained that the exhibition of all levels was aimed to show the Architecture Prodi processes, which focus on ‘Spaces for Cooperative Living’. Every work showcases the design application of a room from the micro to macro scale, from rooms for individuals, single families, and residential complexes to rooms that fulfill the needs of a city. All of the works incorporate trends or phenomena and the needs of an area of interest.

The exhibition was welcomed well by the professional architects as they believe it will allow them to understand students’ conceptual understanding through their works.

Willis Kusuma – from Willis Kusuma Architect (WKA), one reviewer of the Architecture Design Studio (SDN) 5 level, said, “Through this exhibition, I can see students strive to answer existing problems. The exhibition is good for us to understand how far the students understand the concepts. In the future, the real world will have very different challenges, but the students will be prepared well through this exhibition.”

The final project exhibition challenges students to produce work that answers existing problems, which was done by the students of SDN 5. Working together with Soongsil University from South Korea, students were invited to create designs that answer existing problems in underdeveloped cities of South Korea.

The exhibition also allowed reviewers to see the potentials of UPH Architecture students who have taken the SDN 1 course. This was witnessed by Ardy Hartono – CoFounder Dua Studio, who complimented students of class 2019.

Hartono said, “From their works, I see that students show a basic understanding of the concept of space. Their works show the students’ big potential as architects.”

In addition, the exhibition showcased works of SDN 2 with the theme ‘Living with New Territory and Boundary’. The studio asks students to create designs for a single-family. The permanent house focuses on territory and boundaries in a family according to a generation Z family.

Meanwhile, students in their seventh semester showcase a unique ‘Co-Living’ concept, which is a room accommodating the wish to share a room while maintaining privacy between individuals. Jackie Thiodore, the coordinator instructor for SDN 3, chose this concept to challenge students to create a residential solution with both private and communal rooms. As a case study, the instructor chose the Gading Serpong housing so that students will have the right concept of Co-Living.

The Co-Living work created by the students received praise from reviewer Maria Rosantina, the Principal Architect of D-Associates. Rosantina said, “The works were fresh and bold in offering new things. The exhibition is a good step to minimize the gap between education and the field. The Co-Living concept is interesting, and it doesn’t have any real precedents yet, only concepts such as dorms or boarding houses. Therefore, this is a very relevant theme.”

Through the exhibition for students of classes of 2016 to 2019, UPH hopes that it will provide outsiders an image of how UPH Architecture is always updated on trends and needs of the field through the works of their students. In addition, by presenting reviewers who are professional architects, UPH hopes to show the good relationship between UPH and professionals to enrich students’ knowledge and practice.
