UPH Hosts 2021 ISMOA Scientific Conference.

Universitas Pelita Harapan’s (UPH) Electrical Engineering Study Program officially hosted the 2021 International Symposium on Modern Optics and Its Applications (ISMOA). This year, ISMOA adopted a theme of Photonics for Better Life”, and was held virtually on August 2-4, 2021. This bi-annual scientific conference is organized by the Indonesian Optical Society (InOS) along with two national universities and aims to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas among regional and international scientists working in the field of modern optics.

The conference includes webinars, plenary meetings, poster presentations and presentations of papers by internationally renowned scientists. Based on the overarching theme of the event, there were 14 specific topics explored in-depth during the panel discussions.

Among others, they include Photonic Sensing, Photonic for fighting the pandemic, Biophotonics, Micro and Nano Photonics, Plasmonics, Metamaterials, Photovoltaics/Solar Cells, Nonlinear Optics, Optical Spectroscopy, Numerical Modeling and Simulation of Photonics, Photonics for ICT, Functional optical materials, Photonic Crystal and Photonic Crystal Fibers, and Semiconductor Photonic Devices.

“This symposium brought in many guest speakers who are experts in the field of photonics and optics. The topics discussed included photonic sensors, solar cells, photonic chips, metamaterials, solitons, and others. Additionally, the event also conducted research tutorials to both prepare and motivate students as well as aspiring scientists,” according to Dr. Ir. Henri P. Uranus, MT, SMIEEE, Head of UPH’s Faculty of Engineering and Chairman of the Committee for ISMOA 2021.

Meanwhile, UPH’s Rector, DR. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, M.Eng., Sc states that this conference plays a critical role in solving national and global challenges, particularly in the upcoming era of industry 4.0 and society 5.0.

“In my opinion, IT (Information Technology), specifically optics and photonics, plays a crucial role in the expansion of scientific knowledge and in supporting industries as well as the public life. I hope that all scientists, researchers, and professors will continue to contribute to the development of fiber optics for the welfare of humanity.”

On the last day of ISMOA 2021, Okky F. P. G. Daulay from the University of Twente, Netherlands, was awarded ‘Best Contribute Paper; for his paper, ‘Programmable Integrated Microwave Photonic Filter using a Modulation Transformer and a Double-Injection Ring Resonator.’ Nur Atiqah Mansor from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Malaysia, obtained the ‘Best Poster’ recognition for her paper ‘Sustainable Material of Saturable Absorber for Stable Q-switched EDFL Generation’.
