To preserve Indonesia?s tradition not only means performing on stages in? designated cultural buildings, but it can also be done by performing on the stages in campuses. This is what was done by Universitas Pelita Harapan in the beginning of the new semester. The UPH?s Department of Art, a department specialized in handling art performances, had began to organize a schedule of events in which performances would be presented every month. In wrapping up the month of February, which is all about love, the performances were focused on the theme of culture: Tradition Week, which means that performances of folk tale dramas, folk songs, and traditional music instruments will be held for a whole week.
Today, Tuesday (24/2) at 12 PM WIB, the Tradition Week was opened. situated in Caf? of Art, a special stage to perform arts in UPH Campus Area. A drama theater performance was presented, along with national and traditional anthems joined by keroncong musical, and gamelan performances. A Danau Toba Legend performance, which was presented by Teater Proxia, successfully attracted and amused most of the audience. It was close to 1 PM that a choir performance of folk songs had been held along with several other performances to accompany the audience for lunch in Food Junction, where the Caf? of Art stage is situated. ?These performances are very interesting. They make us adore our tradition more and more,? said Mimi, a student from STTPH, one of the audience members.
The purpose of these performances is to develop Indonesia?s culture which apparently had been left out for so long. ?Indonesia is absolutely rich in their traditional cultures that have a very valuable selling point. If these cultures are not preserved quickly, then they could eventually vanish. But aside from that fact, we know that it is our job to educate Indonesians to love their own cultures,? said Boy Marpaung, Acting Structure Theatre in UPH-Department of Art.
These performances were not only performed by UPH students, but also by some artists from the Institute of Art in Jogjakarta and some artists from outside of UPH also helped and showed their abilities in arts. Also, in the future, UPH will be more and more vocal in organizing such events that focus on Indonesia?s traditional cultures, especially in the theater drama area. This will thus show that UPH cares for developing Indonesia?s young generation?s talents that now had been sadly overcame by drugs, free sex, and other destructive behaviors. ?As a member of Indonesia?s young generation, we should love the traditions,? said Boy.
