The Electrical Engineering Department of UPH?s Industrial Technology Faculty (FTI), donated a technological demonstration unit: light water jet and electronic buoy for the Science Museum, TMII (Pusat Peragaan Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi ? PP IPTEK, TMII), Thursday (14/1). The handover was done by Dean of FTI, Herman Kanalebe, and received by Finarya Legoh as the Director of PP IPTEK. These demo unit will then become one of the props that can be tried on by the visitors.

The unit shows how the laser light can be trapped in the water because of the principle of total internal reflection. This is the same principle as the one that works in optical fiber. Through a certain angle called the critical angle, the laser light will be reflected and travels in a zig-zag manner, so the light will follow the water flow. Then the water jet will turn red, the same as the color of the laser light. Thus, visitors can intuitively understand the concept of optical fiber that is widely used for telecommunications.

The same demo unit, also includes an electronic buoy to switch the pump on and off, according to the height of the water level. The function of this tool is similar to a buoy that is usually used for domestic water tank, but this unit utilizes an electronic resistive sensor.(sar)
