Thursday (4/3) Faculty of Law Universitas Pelita Harapan together with Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN) held an International Conference titled ?The Role of Law in National Development and the Future of Nanotechnology in Indonesia.?

This one day-event presented local and foreign experts as speakers, such as Prof. Dr. Juwono Sudarsono (Professor of International Relations, Universitas Indonesia), Prof. David Keith Linnan (Associate Professor University of South Carolina), Prof. Michael Lupton (Professor of Law of Faculty of Law Bond University), Dr. Nurul Taufiqu Rochman, M.Eng (Senior Researcher of Research Center of Physics ? LIPI), and many more.

The foreign speakers gave points of view about the Indonesian law because they have big interests in it, thus audiences were able to see it from another perspective.

Susi Susantijo, SH ? Law Faculty?s Director said, the first session was about law reform in Indonesia. Indonesian law is already been enforced, but not perfectly. It can be seen from numbers of law enforcement that have been processed, such as KPK and court mafia. ?We want to clarify that the role of law is important in national development. If we can enforce law, there will be legal certainty which in turn will bring investors to Indonesia because they feel secure.?

While in the second session, Susi added, it would be better for Indonesia to always look ahead, to the technology advancement that is growing fast at present. One sophisticated technology is nanotechnology. As a new technology that focuses on health, the legal certainty must be supportive, so we can continue to develop and benefit from technology.

The purpose of this international conference, besides to introduce researches done by UPH, is to encourage a better enforcement of Indonesian law, which will result in legal certainties to create a more developed Indonesia. (yun)
