Prof. Manlian inaugurated the opening of CEW 2012

This year Universitas Pelita Harapan Civil Engineering Department organized Civil Engineering Week V. This year’s theme was GREENOVATION: Create the World of Tomorrow… TODAY! That emphasized the green construction. “We choose the topic of green construction because the constructions done by civil engineers create many wastes and use a lot of energy. CEW 2012 is the result of UPH civil engineering’s concern for the Earth in terms of construction. We want to create a better world from now on,” explained the Head of the Committee Filly Wiliani Limbunan, a 7th-semester student.

One of the main programs of CEW was MIDAS seminar and workshop. MIDAS is software used by civil engineers to calculate construction. MIDAS has three kinds; geotech, bridge, and building.

CEW 2012 also introduced Hollow Core Bean. HCB is a centre-holed block that is used to reduce the use of concrete. The program also supports greenovation. “By using less concrete, we also reduce the use of timber formwork that is usually used by engineers to make construction. With HCB, we reduce cutting down the woods,” she proudly said.

CEW 2012 that was held in October 15-19, 2012 aimed to introduce UPH Civil Engineering to the people and attract the high school students who were about to enter college. Therefore, Spaghetti Bridge Competition for high school students and Earthquake Resistance Building Competition for university students were held.

“We gave away prizes like cash and scholarship to study at UPH Civil Engineering for high school students. The first winner got 75% scholarship + Rp 3 million, the second winner got 50% scholarship + Rp 2 million, and the third winner got 25% scholarship + Rp 1 million. For university students, we gave away cash of total Rp 12 million,” told Filly.

The Head of Civil Engineering Department would also thank everyone who participated in the event. “Thank you for the committee who organized the event. I am proud that this little department can do something big. Very inspiring and beneficial. Through the event, we also connect with people from outside campus and develop relationships with many people. We develop channel or network in industry,” told Jack Widjajakusuma in his opening speech.

CEW 2012 was officially opened with beating gongs and balloons release by the Head of Civil Engineering Dept. and the Head of the CEW 2012 Committee as well as speech from Dean of Faculty of Design and Planning Prof. Dr. Ir. Manlian A. Ronald, MT, IAI and Director of Faculty of Design and Planning Andreas Kurniawan Djukardi, M.Const.Mgt.
