UPH to Host Sports Symposium

UPH Sport and Wellness Center will host the ?UPH Sports Symposium? next Friday and Saturday (23-24 August)

UPH Sport and Wellness Center will host the ?UPH Sports Symposium? next Friday and Saturday (23-24 August), which will be full of coaching clinics, sports training for students, motivational speeches, Gospel messages, sports symposiums (academic conference) and sports matches.

This event is open to high school and junior high students, as well as their physical education and sports coaches.

The UPH Sport Symposium?s first day will have students and coaches gather for a Speed Quickness Agility (SQA) Session, to learn how to conduct a SQA training to work on an athlete?s speed, quickness and agility. The first day will also have a motivational speech and gospel message from UPH Sports and Wellness Center Executive Director and UPH Eagles men?s basketball coach Stephen Metcalfe.

Other than the series of events, the first day of the UPH Sports Symposium will also feature an exhibition game dedicated to UPH Eagles alumni. The game will be between the alumni basketball team, consisting of Eagles student-athletes who have graduated, versus the UPH Internal Sports League All-Stars (plus UPH staff members).

The second day of the Sports Symposium will have different activities for the coaches and students. Students will be involved in sports-specific training in basketball, volleyball, soccer, badminton, swimming, fitness training or weight training. At the same time, the coaches will be involved in two coaching clinics on the ?Philosophy of Coaching? (presented by Stephen Metcalfe) and ?Managing a Sport Program? (presented by Sekolah Pelita Harapan?s Athletic Director Jason Myers).

After the sports-specific training and coaching clinics there will be a two symposium sessions, which is open to public. The first symposium session is about ?The Role of School/Campus in Developing Sports as a Tool to Educate, Challenge and Shape Indonesian Youth?, which will be presented by Dr. Niel Nielson who is a former collegiate tennis player at Wheaton College currently working as Chairman for Lippo Group Education Initiative. The second session is on ?The Role of Sports to Help Shape the Ethics, Values, and Morals of Indonesian Youth?, which will be presented Luke Roush who is a former American football college player at Duke University currently serving as Managing General Partner of Sovereign?s Capital.

To close the final day of the Sports Symposium, which also closes UPH Festival 20, will be an exhibition game between UPH Eagles and defending collegiate national champion Institut Teknologi Harapan Bangsa (ITHB). The two teams met in the final of Liga Mahasiswa on February 2013 with ITHB narrowly edging out the Eagles, and should produce an excellent match to watch to close the UPH Sport Symposium.
