Along with the growth of Church Music major in Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), UPH Conservatory of Music invited an expert on vocal and choral music field from Belhaven University ? Dr. Christopher Shelt.

Dr. Shelt is Coordinator of Vocal Arts at Belhaven University where he serves as Professor of Vocal Arts, Choral Arts & Music Ministries.  Besides teaching, Dr. Shelt is also baritone soloist, vocal clinician, Church Music consultant, choral conductor, and published author.

His visit to UPH is because of the current progress of UPH church music in integrating faith and learning within the context of musical training. In his seminar, Dr. Shelt tried to guide the participants to have a better understanding on music world from Christian Worldview point and to give a clear depiction of how culture and music blend with each other so that participants could identify a clear boundary between sacred music and secular music.

?The Christians should be an agent of salt and light to make a change to a better God?s image as you practice, play and the way you interact not just in music but also in your character and your whole life,? said Dr. Shelt when explaining the Christian Worldview. According to him, church music is not only fixed to old and rigid style but also could be influenced by another form of music such as opera, jazz, contemporary and any other forms as long as the forms belong to good music category ? easy listening and have positive value.

Dean of UPH Conservatory of Music ? Antonius Priyanto said that this seminar is not only aimed for UPH students but also to all of music institutions including churches. He hoped that music institutions could respond to their callings from the perspective as a Christian through Dr. Shelt?s seminar.

The seminar is held for 3 days, from October 2 to October 3 and October 5, 2013 at Universitas Pelita Harapan, Karawaci. (ym)
