?Red symbolizes bravery, white symbolizes purity. It is impossible to rely only on bravery but it is not pure, to rely only on purity but it is not brave. That kind of attitude is not going to make anything.?

This is the answer given by former chair of Mahkamah Konstitusi ? MK (Constitutional Court), Mahfud MD, when answering the presidential criteria questions. The upcoming 2014 Presidential Election has become the highlighted topic at the ?International Symposium on Constitution & Anti Corruption 2013? on Monday, October 7, 2013, in Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), Karawaci .

The international symposium is a result of cooperation between UPH Faculty of Law and Mahkamah Konstitusi with Perkumpulan untuk Pemilu dan Demokrasi (Perludem), Pusat Studi Konstitusi dan Anti Korupsi (Pusaka) UPH, Kemitraan, and Tiri. With the theme: ?Election in 2014: Free from Corruption towards New Indonesia? featured a rank of important figures from Mahkamah Konstitusi, Prof. Mahmud MD ? former chair; election commission, Husni Kamil Manik ? Head of KPU; and election supervisory board, Dr. Muhammad ? Banwaslu Chair.

In this symposium, one of the discussion topics was the corruption cases that are getting worse in Indonesia and the action taken by state institutions to track every case with the preventions especially in the light the upcoming 2014 Presidential Election. According to Mahfud, Indonesia have to have a leader who is clean, strong and not easily swayed by other elements so that the corruption cases could be solved quickly.

Just like the dilemma of chicken and eggs ? which one is the first to come ? currently Indonesia is also experiencing this exact dilemma. ?A good leader must be born from a good process. A good process could happen under a good leadership,? explained Mahfud about the dilemma in Indonesia. He then stated that even though the three pillars of democracy ? legislative, executive, and judicative ? has been experiencing significant regression in achievements, Indonesia still have its press and social media that is used to help monitoring the political activities. As it is known, social media has brought Barack Obama the winning over his rival in the America Presidential Election.

The symposium is going to be held for two days (October 7 to October 8, 2013) at UPH Karawaci and presented in talkshow, seminar and call for paper formats. (ym)
