UPH Male Basketball Team Ranked Third in LIMA Basket Nasional

The Eagle male team came third in the 2014 Liga Mahasiswa (LIMA). On the other hand, the female team is ranked fourth. The 2014 LIMA had been held on January 26 at Gelanggang Mahasiswa Soemantri Brojonegoro, Jogjakarta.

Mr. Metcalfe, as the Universitas Pelita Harapan ? The Eagle team?s coach, expressed his impressions of the teams? achievements. He also shared his plan in managing the teams.

What kind of training that have you done this far in preparing UPH Eagle teams?

As their coach, I provide them trainings that are not only focusing on the physical aspects but also building their spiritual aspects toward God. I also instill life lessons that can shape them into a better personality. During their preparation, they have to wake up at 5.00 a.m. and train for two hours to improve their skills and team works.

How do you see your opponents?

I think that all the team we had faced is skillful enough. They possess exceptional basketball skills and works well with their team mates. If they cannot do that, they will not be able to hold out until this far. However, whether an opponent is hard or easy to be defeated, we see it from how much motivations and efforts to exhibit their best skills.

What values that you instill to the team members who competed in the match?

 I always show the attitude of hard working, to strive for the excellent success. As a team, I always remind them to maintain good relations with other team mates. Treat team mates just like a family member and willing to sacrifice to help those in need and overcoming each other lacking. As a coach, it is important to always look spirited, to spread that feeling in the team.  

What is your expectation for the next match?

I already plan several strategies to anticipate any kind of situations that can happen in a match. Honestly, I already write down some of the choices of plan that could be used. But, personally, I do not like a life under expectation. I prefer the team to always put in all their efforts, with everything they have, in every situation. It means that not only in competition setting, but also in academic and their social life.
