Student Association of Civil Engineering is holding their annual event, which is Civil Engineering Week with the theme of ?Sustainable Development?. The event is occurring on from 17 March until 21 March 2014. The purpose of choosing ?Sustainable Development? as a theme because it will motivate the students to think outside the box rather than creating ideas that are common, which creating a building not only from the creativity aspect but from social, economic, and natural resources equally.
Through Spaghetti Bridge Competition, it will automatically train the high school students to get used to creating something innovative and also creative with limited materials. This year, there are 35 team from schools around Jabotabek, which are Penabur, Mahaneim, Tri Ratna, and Dian Harapan.
The participants were given 3 hours to make a strong bridge that can hold a particular weight above it, which was determined by the committee. The bridge itself is made from spaghetti and glue that the brand was chosen by the committee. They also get a measurement standard which is 30 cm x 12 cm x 7 cm. If the bridge measurement exceeds the standards, team will get disqualified from the competition. Not only that, the participants, need to have an accurate calculation and precise construction therefore it has the strength to hold the weigh that used for testing.
One of the team also shared their opinion about the competition. ? This was our first time, we?re attending a competition like this. We think it is interesting and challenging to make. It?s actually quite difficult.? said the team from SMA Tri Ratna, Central Jakarta.
The winner of the competition will be announced on Friday (21/3) at UPH Building D 501 to also close the Civil Engineering Week.
