Last Friday, Jose Luis Guterres, as the foreign relations minister of Timor Leste visited Universitas Pelita Harapan with his wife, R.A Adriani Kusuma Wardani. This visit was welcomed by Prof. Aleksius Jemadu (Dean of FISIP), Budhi T. Yuwono (Vice Rector UPH), Budhi Legowo (Deputy UPH), and Andri Sudjono (Lippo Group Representative).
This visit purpose is to engage Lippo Group to work together in developing Timor Leste economy, health, and education.Timor Leste, who was a part of Indonesia history, makes Indonesia as one of the realiable country they can count on to support the country development. It was represented on the proof that almost ninety percent of the Timor Leste minister graduated from university at Indonesia.
During the discussion, in the visit, Jose Luis Guterres also conveyed the situation of his country and the problem in education field, where it still a big concern to the government. Eighty percent of the schools there haven?t fulfilled a good quality, whereas one of the biggest investments is given to the education aspect. In fact, the investment capital could achieve more than 1 million dollar. But, with the lack of information about the system of creating a good education, the capital cannot be used effectively.
?I hope Lippo Group would consider of working together on helping Timor Leste to be a better country. I want a university like UPH could be an example in improving the education quality and to enlarge human resources that are competent. It would be greater, if Hypermart and Siloam could also be established to support the consumer product distributions and health services.? said R.A Adriani Kusuma Wardani, as the social economy advisor of Timor Leste.
She also invited the UPH professors to come and give public lecture at universities around Timor Leste. In response to the necessity of education resources, Budhi Yuwono, Vice Rector UPH, presented the new program of International Teacher College (ITC), which could be one of the solution to solve the education problem at Timor Leste.
After the discussion, Jose Luis Guterres also had time to go on a campus tour around UPH, such as visiting Grand Chapel, Johannes Oentoro Library, classroom at Building D, and F, lounge MYC, and Sport Center. He also flattered UPH as a campus that is modern and has complete facilities. (pris). |
