Actuary is an expert that can aplly financial sciences and statistical theories to solve current business issues. An actuary can work in an insurance company, consultant, government, hospital, bank and other business that needs financial risk management. According to U.S News & World Report, actuarial profession is one of the 25 Best Profession in 2006.
Though this profession fulfill best profession criterias, but the amount of qualified actuary is still very low, whilst the world?s demand of this profession is still very high. Starting from this background, Manulife Indonesia Actuarial Development Program works together with Mathematics Department of UPH to evolve students interest and potential starting from those with bachelor degree (S1), to produce actuary who is ready to compete in accordance with the needs of the financial service industry.
This cooperation is realized in a public lecture entitled ?Actuarial Profession and SOA Examination? for students in UPH Mathematics Department on June 20, 2014. This seminar was brought by Mr. Rodney Coelho, FSA, FCIA, Senior Vice President ? Deputy Chief Actuary of PT. Asuransi Jiwa Manulife Indonesia. This public lecture was attended by 35 Mathematics Department students from 2010-2013 batch.
In this public lecture, Mr. Rodney introduced the actuarial profession and how to be a successful actuary. According to him, university is the first step for someone to be successful. But of course, students need to choose the right major that correspond to with the actuarial profession such as Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistic Economics, Business and Finance. To gain insights of this profession, you need to figure out information from other sources such as consulting to an actuary, or by being involved in an actuarial club on campus. In addition, internships at actuarial firm can also add extra insights for us, on the actuarial profession. After graduating from college, a prospective actuary needs to take professional examinations, recognized national and even international, namely PAI (Persatuan Aktuaris Indonesia) and SOA (Society of Actuaries). |

?An actuary has to be fully dedicated. When preparing for the exam, I was very young like you guys, I still want to play around and have fun. But I decided to study and get ready for my exam, because I want to pass this exam and be a successful actuary,? explained Rodney.
He also shared some tips on how to be a good actuary. The most important thing is that an actuary need to pass the professional examination. ?If you do not pass the exam, then you would never be an actuary. It is hard. Hence, dedication and sacrifice is needed,? he said. Merely obtaining bachelor?s degree in Mathematics or Actuarial Science, is not enough to make us an actuary. The bachelor?s degree helps us to prepare ourselves to pass professional exams in the future. In addition, the other thing that you need to have is leadership skill and experience.
At the end of session, in collaboration with Manulife Indonesia, UPH Mathematics Department offers FSA Bonus Program for UPH Mathematics Department students.
