For five consecutive years, UPH has succeded to come forth as winners of the National Olympiad on Mathematics and Natural Sciences for University (ON MIPA – PT). This year, UPH has succesfully achieved two medals and one honorable mention. A gold medal in Biology by Rosaria (Biotechnology 2011), a bronze medal for Mathematics by Evan Kurnia Alim (Mathemathics 2013) and a honorable mention in Biology by Joan Christie Wijaya (Biotechnology 2012).

UPH got into the ?Top 8 Universities? who received medals on ON MIPA PT 2015 competition. There were only two Private Universities (PTS) that managed to obtain medals this time, they were UPH and Universitas Surabaya (UBAYA). While the other winners comes from Public Universities (PTN) such as ITB, UI, UGM, IPB and ITS.

This achievement showed the consistency of UPH Biotechnology and Mathemathics majors, the internal Faculty of Science and Technology (FaST), in maintaining and improving their academic qualifications as well as students? knowledge in their respective fields. This acknowledgement was confirmed by Rosaria, from Biotechnology 2011, who has participated on ON MIPA PT for four times and always succesfully achieves several medals. ?For the last two years of this olympiad, it was really different from the previous years. This time, the problems were far more applicative, thus it encourages us to think more creatively in solving the problems,?  said Rosa.

The National Olympiad on Mathematics and Natural Sciences University Level 2015 was held on May 24-28. There were four fields for the competition, Mathemathics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The final round was followed by 256 students from 81 universities who were also the representatives for the First Winner and Second Winner for Kopertis region. Each field was followed by 64 finalists.

The organizing committee, DIKTI, hoped that ON MIPA-PT can encourage the improvement of student?s academic abilities and knowledge, and also their fondness towards MIPA (Mathematics and Natural Sciences). Aside from that, it is also expected that this competition can affect the quality and knowledge improvement of lecturers and teachers as well as providing inputs for the quality improvement in terms of education, especially in MIPA. This competition could also be used in means of promoting the interest in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology subject or courses in the society. (rh)
