Architecture Open Talk is one of the programs of Triennale Architecture held by UPH Architecture Himpunan Mahasisa Jurursan (HMJ) in collaboration with Anabata on July 25, 2015 until August 8, 2015. The Architecture Open Talk #1, ??Arsitektur Nusantara untuk Bandara Indonesia? presented well-known and successful local architects such as Yori Antar and Andra Matin.

Before the discussion started, the moderator made an announcement about the Airport Design Competition 2015.  This competition is based on the increasing needs for better airport facilities due to the increasing amount of passengers. ?We hope this competition can produce a better airport design which reflects local identity and is rich of local culture along with good quality of safety and convenience based on standard,? shared the moderator while inviting the participants to participate.

Opening the discussion of approximately 127 participants, Yori Antar delivered an appreciation to UPH Architecture for the inspirational exhibition. And then, Yori shared about the background and purpose of the airport design competition. ?After a long time, Indonesia architecture is sill on seeking its identity. Traditional architecture is left behind because it is considered outdated and as the symbol of unintelligent era. Whereas, it is a perfect and green form of architecture that actually wanted by world class architectures.,? he said. Yori really hoped to save the local architecture from extinction. According to him, the perception and mindset should be changed. ?With thousand of ethnicities and cultures, Indonesia should influence the world, not the other way around,? he said. From this competition, Yori hoped for the rise of an idea of airport design that highly reflects and values locality of Indonesia, and still also reflects modern functions. If the architects are given problem such as limited fund and location, their designs will turn out smart.

The discussion was continued by Andra Matin, who showed and explained the designs of local and international building and airport. Andra emphasized that the locality should be increased, not only in architecture but also in interior design. ?UPH fellows are very creative to host this event in an old building like this,? he said. Art pieces are really hard to be shown in Indonesia airport. Andra gave an example about the art piece of Asmat ethnic group which got dominated by the interior design and eventually showed the sense that traditional and modern design do not belong together.

Yori Antar reminded about the challenge in designing airport. ?Do not stuck on the past but also focus on the future.? Architects must also translate the modern element without making the airport become more complicated and expensive. ?We hope there will be a clear direction of a good and right design of Indonesia airport. The entry part must also reflects the atmosphere of local,? he said while appreciating the design of Banyuwangi airport as a great example. (nn)
