Human has been given a cultural mandate by God (Genesis 1:28) to shape all aspects according to God?s will, including in terms of art. This philosophy has been the expression of Art Division ? Student Life Department, to facilitate UPH students according to UPH Art’s vision and mission. For seven years, after its establishment on year 2008, Art Division has contributed many things in art, especially in introducing Indonesian culture around the world.
On September 3, UPH Art Division held ARTWEEK at the Caf? of Art Food Junction UPH, to introduce Art Division to the new students as well as to recruit new members. During the 22nd UPH Festival, a number of 1147 new students signed up and during the ARTWEEK, about 145 students also signed up, so in total the number of students who signed up was 1292.
Art Division has 10 Student Organizations (UKM-Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa), such as the Spirit Dance Company which act as a place for students to express their talents in contemporary dance (Held every Monday & Wednesday, 16.30-18.30 at Sem Studio), Photography ART (PART) – a photography community that is able to foster a sense of aesthetic and to see objects from an artistic point of view (Held every Tuesday & Wednesday, 16.30-18.30 at the Paddock 210), Nusantara Dance Company which act as a place for students to express their talents in traditional dances. Students are able to obtain knowledge about Indonesian traditional dances and also in Nusantara Creation dance, which combines both traditional and modern dance elements (Held every Tuesday & Thursday, at the Semar Studio).
The next one is Bireun Seudati Dance Company, which is Aceh?s traditional dance that has obtained acknowledgement from UNESCO as one of Indonesia?s World Heritage. Bireun Seudati Dance Company was created to conserve this world of heritage. This Student Organization Unit had already participated in many events, both national and international (Held every Tuesday & Thursday, 16.30-18.30 at the Paddock 201). Movie Production Club which expresses beauty through film-making. These group of Students who love film-making get lessons and theories about film-making, such as directing, theories regarding camera, writing scenario, production and acting so that in the end, students can develop their cinematography potential (Held every Tuesday & Wednesday, 16.30-18.30 at Paddock 208). Manna Proxia Theatre was established since 2008 and has been suppoerting student?s creativity in the art of acting and theatre. Here, students are encouraged to express their imagination through gestures, expression and voice, and not only acting on the stage, but also screen acting (Held every Monday-Thursday, 16.30-18.30 at the Cepot Studio).
Then there is the UPH CHOIR, which was established on April 4, 2005. Since 2005, UPH Choir has managed to present numerous pieces creation. With song repertoire insight wrapped with dynamic choreography, this UKM had proved its existence through various concerts and achievements. Not just at UPH internally, UPH Choir had gone to national and international competitions too (Held every Monday & Wednesday, 16.30-18.30 at Building B.360). Lighthouse singers is a place where students can express rhythm, notes, melody and harmony through vocal art. Sharpening individual vocal abilities through a variety of music genre (Held every Monday& & Thursday, 16.30-18.30 at the Petruk Studio). Art Band is a place for students to express their ideas about musical instrument technique in various music genre. With an adequate facility for band, great music studio and great recording, Art Band can foster student?s creativity in finding new techniques from the existing genres (Held every Monday & Wednesday, 16.30-18.30 at the Art Office). The last but not least is Production Troops which is supporting student’s creativity in the field of stage management. Production Troops teach all things about Stage & Production Management, Schedule Design, Artistic Directing, Budgeting, Publicity, dynamics team (Every Monday & Thursday, 16.30-18.30 at Art Office).
Art Division creates a sense of kinship between the members, it was because every member shared the same passion in art and each of them has the desire to express their talents. Art Division also has a lot of events focusing on SMART (Study, Maturity, Abstinence, Responsibility, Talents) which could accommodate all talents and expression of each members. Aside from that, all of the Art Instructors has the heart of service, thus they can be a place for students to exchange their thoughts and to share their problems with. The art process in every activity itself, which tighten the bond between one another. For example, in the theater, when one actor didn?t come, then the other actors would also be disturbed because there is a dependency between artists. Hence, aside from enhancing intellectual, emotional, cultural and creativity competency, art process can also be seen as a tool that enhances one?s awareness as a social being, in which they will need other people in their everyday life, because others are the means of the application of God?s love. Each Student organization has a mentoring system which supplies students with the “care” that they need, so that ART could always be said as a home which tightened the ties of each family member.
During this past seven years, Art Division has sought to introduce Indonesian culture to other countries, such as by creating UKM Nusantara Dance Company & Bireun Seudati Dance Company at UPH, as the pioneer of the love for our local culture, organizing archipelago cultural themed events and to follow competitions or International festivals with ?Folklore? theme.
One of the difficulties that Art Division members had to cope with is the limited time, practice room and properties. Even so, it didn?t lessen their passion to keep working in art and this persistence bear its fruit, for almost all active members will always follow competitions and organize their own talent show. With such a tight schedule, these students are able to show their possession of excellent academic qualities, that they?re able to excel in classes and is also skillful in time management.
Some other events that will be held by Art Division in September ? October are Artweek (all UKM), Cre-Art-Ivity (All UKM), The Box (PART), Rhythm of The Stars (Art Band), Dreamland (Manna Proxia Theatre), Christmas Concert (UPH Choir) and Christmas of Art (All UKM). (fc/mv)
