In order to commemorate Indonesia?s 71st Independence Day, Civitas Academica of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) followed the ceremonial proclamation of Indonesia?s independence, on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at 08.00 to 09.00 in the Basketball court of UPH Campus, Lippo Village, Karawaci. Approximately, a number of 1300 participants, including Rectorates Leaders, lecturers, staffs, student organization and students representatives, participated in the procession.

 

The flag raising ceremony was executed by a flag bearer troop of nine students. Then, the procession continued with the reading of the proclamation text, the preamble of UUD ?45 and Pancasila, followed by all participants.

 

Rector of UPH, Dr. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, M. Eng. Sc., as the master of ceremonies, read the speech written by the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia on this 71st anniversary of Indonesia?s proclamation of Independence, with the theme ?Real Work?

 

In his speech, everyone was reminded to always be grateful for the independence Indonesia had gotten, by doing a real work. The Minister also proclaimed 2016 as the year of innovation, as a form of appreciation and recognition for the success of the Indonesia?s children in the Science and Technology aspect. Hopefully, through this year of innovation proclamation, knowledge based economy will soon be granted.

 

Technology and innovation is an inseparable part of Indonesia?s people and now, it has even become a development driving factor. Due to that reason, higher education holds an important role in preparing the young generation of Indonesia to be innovators.

 

In his speech, the minister underlined the importance of partnership to deliver research findings into innovations and large-scale market of Science and Technology. Therefore, the government encourages partnerships between various institution and industries which will eventually enhance the efficiency and effectivity for innovation in various life aspects. This point is also relatable with the challenges in the globalization era, where innovations are expected to meet the needs of people as well as the market of other countries.

 

In the end of the speech, everyone was once again prompted to take part in the National Movement: Let?s Do Real Work and Surge Innovation in All Places ,because only a nation with innovation can be a big and competitive nation.

 

After the speech, the ceremony was continued by singing ?Hari Merdeka? and ?Satu Nusa Satu Bangsa?. The ceremony was then ended with a prayer for the nation and after that, there was a photos session with the representatives of student organizations and new students with Rector. (rh)
