UPH Conservatory of Music (CoM) as a faculty that committed to producing graduates who are competent in academic and art; again reinforced its position, by holding a series of international ‘A Musical Feast’ concerts.

‘A musical feast’ or this concert series is held in four days from 19-22 October 2017, consists of master class, piano concert, also orchestra and choir music collaborations. This concert series presents world-class musicians, Dr. Chi-Kit Lam from Hongkong, and Prof. Albert Tiu from the Philippines.

The concert series began on October 19, 2017 with the performance of Chi-Kit Lam, a talented young pianist from Hong Kong who has a doctorate degree in classical piano performance from Kansas University, USA, and won several international competitions such as MTNA Young Artist Competition, International Young Artist Piano Competition, and Naftzger Young Artist Piano Competition.

Another musician, Albert Tiu has been called ?an artist of uncommon abilities? by American Record Guide and achieves some of the awards such as tribute by Fanfare for his record ?Nocturnal Fantasies? released at 2010, as a ?one of the best piano recording all the time.? Currently, he officiates as an Associate Professor Piano at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore.

In the visit of these world-class musicians to CoM UPH besides performing a solo concert piano, they also share the knowledge through masterclass.

On October 19, 2017, concert, Chi-Kit Lam played six composer songs from famous composers, among them are Hayden with Piano Sonata in E major XVI: 31, Sonata Piano no 2 in G-sharp minor by Scriabin, L ‘ isle Joyeuse by Debussy, and the last Chopin with 3 pieces; Ballade no 3 in A-flat major, 4 Mazurkas op. 17 and the last of Scherzo’s No. 2 in B-flat major.

Through his play on the piano, he wanted to tell the story, bring the atmosphere and the picture of a different era behind the composition to the audience.

?The example; is the music from Debussy, a very interesting music. L’isle Joyeus inspired by the painting. At the beginning of the 20th century. Debussy was inspired by the painting. Debussy tries to reproduce the painting of a music. So there are a lot of elements behind the musical composition. These are the stories that I want to present through the form of a show, “explained Chi Kit Lam.

On the occasion of a masterclass attended by Conservatory of Music students, Chi-Kit Lam was very impressed and amazed at the UPH CoM students. According to him, UPH CoM students are very talented and have a strong passion. That is the most important thing. Even he can feel what the students are conveyed, presenting what the composer really wants to say.

Chi Kit Lam hopes that through the concert piano and a master class held by CoM UPH there will be more musicians creating and motivated to commit giving the best. (tm / rh)
