Introduction by Prof. Dr.Tjipta Lesmana, at seminar of Power, Journalism and The Media

?When making mistakes, a lot of journalists are fighting back to resist the imprisonment. When they finally end up in jail, it will be called press criminalization,? said Prof. Dr. Tjipta Lesmana M.A., MARS., at the seminar called Power, Journalism, and The Media, which was held in Grand Ballroom ? Aryaduta Hotel, on Friday (22/1).

This is different with the media law enforcement in America. Prof. Dr. J. Douglas Tarpley, Ph.D, a Dean of Communication and Fine Arts ? BIOLA University, USA,  explained that journalists in America have an awareness of the media law, so they are more ready in terms of punishment penalty.
In his presentation, Tarpley adopted the concept of mass media function by a sociologist named Charles Wright. Based on the concept, he formulates the function of media as news, editorial, feature, economic, and one more thing that he adds, which is called ?watchdog?. It shows that Tarpley believes in mass media having an important role in a society, that is being its eyes and ears.

Tarpley emphasized on the fact that the journalist?s reports would cause a big impact to the society. As an organization that can create values and beliefs to the public, media needs to be humble when doing the job. ?Bearing in mind the power and impact of media in forming society?s values and trusts, journalists should prioritize their humanity side when gathering and presenting the information. Journalists would also need protection and freedom in accomplishing their tasks,? said Tarpley at the end of the seminar.

Tarpley added that the freedom of press is not absolute, therefore the press needs to do the job responsibly in order to develop and nurture the society according to its own potentials. (yun)
