Universitas Pelita Harapan inaugurated Prof. Gabriel A. Moens ? the Dean and Law Professor of Murdoch University School of Law, Australia ? as the Adjunct Professor at UPH Faculty of Law, on Thursday, January 27 2011 at UPH campus, Tangerang. The Dean of UPH Law Faculty, Prof. Bintan Saragih, SH., stated that this inauguration is an appreciation for Prof. Moens? contributions to UPH Faculty of Law as a lecturer in several law subjects, a coach for UPH moot court team, as well as coordinating the cooperation between the two universities. This has escalated the quality of teaching at UPH Law Faculty, and given a plus point for the law students. In his short lecture, Prof. Moens analyzed the globalisation of legal education. He said that in the 1960 to 1970, law students from one country can not visit and study law in overseas university that has different law system with the home country. At that time, law was a study field with a domestic scope without any global aspects. Twenty five years later, ever since a renewal of legal education was opened in the Netherlands ? which was known as the Erasmus Program ? students from European Union could study at universities in various countries within the European Union, which practically have different law system -common law and civil law-. The impact was then law students could study domestic and international law. Afterwards the law study curriculum was also developing and globalizing. Globalisation of legal education is beneficial, such as elevating the students? ability to be efectivelly professional in the domestic and international areas, making it possible for international curriculum, having more globalized knowledge scopes, being acknowledged in different countries, as well as developing a global market for the provision of legal services. ?In other words, the internationalization of law curriculum enables students to be facilitated both academically and career wise in the international level. For example, students could join the international moot court competition, like the one being followed by UPH law students and others. This is an excellent opportunity for law students to learn their subject in the international scope,? said Prof. Moens. He also conveyed the importance of a law school to get accrediation in another country. It would enable the school to receive students from various countries; like what has been done by Murdoch University. Prof. Moens joined UPH since 2006, and routinely gave lectures of several subjects at the beginning of the year, among others are: Constitutional Law, International Trade Law, Arbitration and Contract. Under his supervision, UPH moot court teams have won competitions and made their way to the international round. He is also the man behind the Dual Degree program, a cooperation between UPH Law Faculty and Murdoch University ? Australia, in the Bachelor of Common Law program. This cooperation enables UPH law students to take the Bachelor of Common Law program at Murdoch University for only 1 year. The dual degree program is offered in packages of 4 semesters at UPH, 2 semesters at Murdoch University, and 1 semester back at UPH to finish the final project/assignment. By then, students who have successfully completed this program will attain two academic titles at the same time: Sarjana Hukum (SH) and Bachelor of Common Law (BCL). ?This program gives added values to UPH Law graduates, because they master two law systems, civil and common law. Furthermore, BCL graduates who want to become lawyers in Australia can continue their study with Murdoch University?s Juris Doctor program for a year,? explained Susi Susantijo, the Director of UPH Law Faculty. Dr. (HC) Jonathan L. Parapak, M.Eng.Sc., UPH Rector, on this occasion expected that, Prof. Moens? presence would elevate the insight, knowledge quality, and character of UPH law students, so that in time they will become law experts with integrity.
