UPH Mathematics Talk Show: Introducing Data Scientist and Actuary to High School Students.

These days, many students still think that mathematics is a difficult subject with fewer job prospects. Many students still think that mathematics graduates can only work as lecturers or mathematics teachers. However, the prospects for mathematics graduates are actually very broad with great salary offerings, we can take Actuary and Data Scientist as examples. These two mathematical professions are discussed thoroughly in “A Day with Math Talk Show: Actuarial and Data Science”, a Talk Show held on February 13, 2020, at UPH Lippo Village Campus, Tangerang.

“These days, data science covers a quite wide range. Data science deals with problems. Therefore, if there are any problems in a company, they could most likely be resolved with data. However, even technology can’t replace a replace data scientist,” said Setyven S.Si., S.Kom – Head of Data Style Theory.

Aside from Setyven, who focuses on data science, two other actuarial professionals were also present. They are Steven Tanner, FSAI – an Actuary in PT Dayamandiri Dharmakonsolindo and Mourits Rompah – an Actuary in PT Dayamandiri Dharmakonsolindo. By inviting these two actuaries, hopefully, High School students could realize the wide job prospects of a mathematics graduate, especially as actuary and data scientist.

“Where there is data, there is an actuary. This profession has strict regulations. Both Actuarial and data science have intersecting disciplines. Aside from mathematics, actuarial students also learn economy because of the subject’s close relation with investment,” said Mourist.

Similarly, Steven Tanner also said that actuarial science also uses data, just not as complex and deep as data science. “Both data science and actuarial science are closely related to coding, therefore, each mathematics program should have a computer course,” Steven added.

In the end, Steven shared some tips for High School students who are interested to enter the Mathematics program in UPH according to his personal experience.

“At the end of the first until the second year, students of UPH Mathematics are required to learn everything, including actuarial and data science. It would be better to choose the actuary concentration on your third year because basically, you have been learning about 70% of data science for two years. Becoming an actuary requires a long process, and in UPH, you can learn both at once and saves time,” Steven stated.
Hopefully, this Talk Show can help High School students to understand the distinction between these two disciplines and determine their interest as early as possible.
