UPH Architecture Wins First Place in Saint Gobain Design 2022, Represents Indonesia in the International Round.

The principle of upholding historical and cultural values with a sentimental value design concept approach, brought a collaborative team of students and lecturers from Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) to win First Place in the prestigious International Competition-Architecture Student Contest, Saint Gobain Indonesia 2022 (National Rounds) on April 27, 2022. The UPH team consists of Cindy Lovanka (2018), Vincent Alexis Sutjianto (2018), Jessica Sanusi (2019), and supervisor lecturer Dewobroto Adhiwignyo, S.T., S.Ds., M. Sc. initiated the idea of the revitalizing the area around the East Warsaw railway station in Poland. The UPH team’s success in the National Round has made them the sole representatives of Indonesia, and they will compete with 32 other countries in the International Round in Warsaw, 8-10 June 2022.

“We are truly proud and honored to have the chance of representing Indonesia on the international stage. Our design project is entitled ‘The Overlay’; a Warsaw urban reflecting the three time periods of the city of Warsaw: the socialist era (cold war 1945-1991), the liberal era (1991-2022), and the future era (2022 onwards). Applying various unique concepts is what distinguishes our design projects. We view sustainability not only as a building technology aspect, but also as a historical and cultural aspect. We combined all aspects and resulted in more advanced urban elements that are healthy, economical, and efficient,” Cindy Lovanka explained.

Dewobroto Adhiwignyo’s role as a supervisor and the success of UPH students are inseparable. Dewabroto directs students to use analytical strategies related to ‘historical and cultural significances’ as a starting point for the design. “I emphasized using historical and cultural significance since Warsaw has these values. Hence, even though this competition highlights environmental sustainability through the use of cutting-edge building technology and engineering, our team recognizes that the public will be in favor of a design that represents the city’s local values (historical, cultural, and social),” Dewobroto said.

They faced numerous challenges while working on the project, starting from Warsaw history research, deciding on the concept of city development, up to selecting product materials that corresponded to the results of the analysis. Cindy and the team admitted that the knowledge they gained from UPH Architecture, which included Digital Architecture, Building Analysis Simulation, Design Research Studio, Sustainable Architecture, and Building Construction, enabled them to overcome these challenges.

“The architecture course at UPH has given us the confidence to compete because we were well prepared through various courses and experiences during our studies. On the other hand, there is always encouragement and motivation from our lecturers throughout the learning process, and they even participate in competitions. Our lecturers provide information on various competitions, patiently guide us through the collection process, and build motivation to keep us going, so that we have the spirit and motivation to win,” Cindy and the team explained.

In preparation for the International round of competition, they held direct discussions with the judges and received various inputs, which they incorporated into the development of the ‘The Overlay’ design project. The collection of design projects for the international round has been completed, and the UPH team has prepared for the final presentation in Warsaw. Good luck in the international competition, UPH Architecture!
