Enhance Competence while Working through UPH Nursing Employee Class Program.

Education plays a vital role in improving the quality of human life. It enables individuals to develop the necessary skills and abilities to achieve their goals and face life’s challenges. In addition to expanding knowledge and critical thinking skills, education enhances employment opportunities and determines one’s career path.

The importance of education, particularly higher education, is highlighted by two students from the UPH Faculty of Nursing Employee Class who attended the Conversion Class: Laura BR Sinulingga and Elizabeth Friska Hasibuan (UPH FoN Class of 2022). Despite their busy work schedules, they are determined to enhance their competencies by pursuing higher education.

Laura has been working as a nurse at St. Carolus Summarecon Hospital since 2015. She previously worked for 20 years at St. Carolus Hospital in Salemba, Central Jakarta. For Laura, education not only supports her career but also enables her to think more critically. This drove her decision to enrol in the UPH Nursing Professional Development Program for Working Professionals.

“At first, I was hesitant to study at UPH because I perceived it as an internationally acclaimed institution, and I was concerned about keeping up. However, once I started my studies, it was different from what I had anticipated. The professional faculty members who consistently provided support made me feel comfortable being part of UPH. I am proud to be able to study at UPH,” Laura expressed.

In addition to being a nurse and a student, Laura is also a mother. Juggling multiple responsibilities requires effective time management to ensure the smooth execution of all her duties. She is grateful for the positive support she receives from her community, including her family, colleagues, and UPH faculty, in fulfilling these roles.

Laura hopes to apply the knowledge she acquires after graduating from UPH. One of the valuable insights she has gained during her studies is from the Palliative Care Nursing course, which focuses on caring for patients with medically incurable conditions such as cancer, kidney failure, and heart diseases. Laura believes that understanding how to care for such patients is a unique aspect she learned exclusively through her studies at UPH.

“Palliative care aims to provide comfort to patients. This specialized form of care is only available in certain hospitals, and I acquired the knowledge from UPH on how nurses can approach and provide care to patients,” Laura explained.

Similarly, Elizabeth acknowledges the significance of education in supporting her career. She believes that possessing good skills and knowledge leads to positive outcomes. Elizabeth resumed her studies 20 years after completing her nursing academy. Initially, she faced difficulties adapting to the technology-based learning system implemented at UPH. However, with guidance from the faculty members, she has overcome these challenges.

“With the current technological advancements, particularly in the healthcare field, we must keep up with the developments and expand our knowledge as we aim to provide the best services and make a greater impact. Exceptional care brings satisfaction to patients and increases their trust in the hospital,” Elizabeth stated.

Elizabeth has been working as a nurse at Siloam Lippo Village Hospital since 2014. In addition to her nursing duties, she also holds the responsibility of overseeing the Intensive Cardiology Care Unit (ICCU) and High Care Unit (HCU). Elizabeth is entrusted with various tasks, including providing guidance, coaching, and motivation to the staff, ensuring adherence to nursing practice standards, operational procedures, nursing care delivery methods, documentation systems, and job descriptions. She ensures consistency in implementing quality and patient safety programs and upholds the principles and ethical code of the profession.

Elizabeth believes that the biggest challenge she faces in her job is the advancement of technology and knowledge in the field of healthcare. She must strive to enhance her knowledge and skills in order to provide quality care to patients. This has motivated her to continue her education and choose the UPH Employee Class Program.

“Attending this course helps me provide compassionate nursing care in the workplace and to glorify God through my service. Additionally, I also learned about designing research based on Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). EBP research is highly beneficial for me as a clinical and managerial nurse in implementing innovations to improve the quality of nursing care for patients,” she explains.

Elizabeth adds that with the knowledge she gains during her education at UPH, she hopes to develop the field of nursing and provide even better service to the patients where she works. In her profession, Elizabeth is committed to upholding values such as honesty, perseverance, patience, love, integrity, compassion, discipline, and always working with a focus on God.

The UPH FoN Employee Class is committed to providing quality education and supporting the government’s efforts to produce professional healthcare personnel and services. The program is delivered through a flexible learning method called Multi-Flexible (M-Flex), allowing students to work while studying anywhere and anytime.
