Jacky Thiodore: Committed to Nurturing Globally Competitive Architectural Talents through Education.

Jacky Thiodore, S.Ars., M.Arch., an architecture lecturer at Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), has nurtured a profound love for architecture since his childhood. This lifelong passion guided him to immerse himself in the study of architecture during his college years. Currently, as both an educator and a practitioner, Jacky is resolute in his dedication to advancing the field of architecture in Indonesia. Since 2014, he has been a permanent lecturer in UPH’s architecture program, where taught several courses, including Architectural Design Studio 4, Digital Fabrication, Sustainable Architectural Systems, and Innovative Digital Technology.

Jacky’s unwavering commitment to architecture prompted him to pursue a Bachelor of Architecture degree at UPH, but his thirst for knowledge did not stop there. He pursued further studies and earned a Master of Architecture (M.Arch) degree from University College London (UCL), UK, in 2016. His educational experience in the UK ignited his passion for academia.

“During my post graduate study in the UK, I had the privilege of exploring cutting-edge research in architecture. It became evident to me that there was a substantial disparity between architectural education in Indonesia and that offered abroad. This realization fueled my desire to contribute to the advancement of architectural education in Indonesia through academia. Ultimately, I chose to return to my alma mater and teach at UPH because know that we share similar values, such as hard work, dedication, and integrity,” Jacky explained.

In his role as an educator, Jacky places a strong emphasis on digital computational techniques in technology-driven architectural design. He firmly believes that this approach is highly relevant to the future of architecture, as technology has the potential to enhance both the efficiency and quality of architectural work. Moreover, computational techniques also empower students to materialize their creative ideas and tackle the intricacies of architectural projects. In order to further pursue this field, Jacky founded Theta Indonesia, an architectural firm specializing in the application of computational techniques to address complex projects.

Jacky has actively contributed to several international-scale projects through Theta Indonesia. Some notable projects in his portfolio include geometric analysis and fabrication for Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS). ETFE is an architectural material used for stadium roof structures that allows the natural light to enter the space even when the stadium roof is closed. Additionally, Theta Indonesia also played a pivotal role in the design of the Cauldron, a structure that served as both a torch and a monument during the 2018 Asian Games held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Central Jakarta.

Jacky’s achievements in his career have garnered him several prestigious awards, including the Best Paper accolade at the International Conference on Construction and Building Engineering (ICONBUILD) 2017, the Future Pillar Award at the Autodesk ASEAN Innovation Awards 2021, and the mentorship of UPH students who won the Saint Gobain Student Contest (National Round) in 2023.

“I hope to contribute to the advancement of architecture in Indonesia, so that we can proudly showcase our projects to the world as a testament to our nation’s progress. I am also committed to nurturing talents from Indonesia to compete on a global scale,” said Jacky.

In terms of education, Jacky offers valuable advice to aspiring architects, urging them not to hesitate in pursuing formal education at the university level. He explained that formal education is a prerequisite for architects to obtain a license, which can be further advanced through Professional Architect Education Program (PPArs). Through formal education, aspiring architects can acquire the knowledge and skills needed to excel and contribute effectively to the architecture industry as professionals.
