Dr. Martin Luqman Katoppo, S.T., M.T.

Dean of School of Design
Dr. Martin Luqman Katoppo, S.T., M.T. was educated, trained, and graduated as an architect at Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) in the year 1998, when Indonesia had its turmoil and entering the era of Reformation. In 2002 Martin obtained his master's degree in architecture - specializing in history, theory and criticism at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), whereas Martin also achieved his Doctoral degree in 2017 with a dissertation entitled Design as Generator for Empowering Community. Martin then entered both architectural practice and academic institution, believing that both are necessary means for being an architect. In architectural practice, Martin and his wife mostly acknowledged for their Rumah Besi (steel house) an experimental (sustainable) home that they created and became the finalist in IAI awards 2011 (highest national architectural competition held by Indonesian Architect Association). In academic institution, Martin became a lecturer in Interior Design Department, School of Design, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) from 2005 until now. Martin held the position of Head of Department of Interior Design from 2010-2013 and now served as Acting Dean for School of Design (SoD), UPH. As an academic Martin published scholarly articles in both indexed International and National Journal. Propelled by his passion for architecture and his obsession of always pushing its limits, in 2013 Martin and other lecturers from SoD, UPH founded DAG-Design as Generator, where he explores the possibility of making the design as a champion, a generator of change within the community. as an organization with a vision of empowering people with an approach of participatory and collaborative design. DAG already had several projects, especially in urban kampong at Southern Tangerang ranging from making design interventions for domestic waste problems, greenery, and creative space for children and up to the remote area in Kalimantan. Martin carries out all of these with a belief that design should become light for others.
