The Faculty of Medicine is one of the most sought-after study programmes among prospective students, as it is considered to offer highly promising career prospects. For instance, based on the 2022 National Selection for State University Entrance (SBMPTN), not a single medical faculty in the 12 state universities (PTN) across Java had fewer than 1,000 applicants. Furthermore, in 2023, Medicine remained the most popular programme in every PTN, chosen by the majority of incoming students. The strong interest in Medicine stems from its reputation for offering stable and rewarding career opportunities.
Despite its popularity, Indonesia still faces a shortage of active doctors. The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) recorded that by mid-2022, Indonesia had only around 140,000 active doctors. This number falls far short of the ideal ratio set by the World Health Organization (WHO), which recommends at least one doctor for every 1,000 people. Based on this standard, Indonesia should ideally have 270,000 doctors to serve its population of approximately 270 million.
For this reason, the presence of medical faculties should not be limited only to state universities, but must also be supported by excellent private institutions such as the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Pelita Harapan (FK UPH). With more than 21 years of experience, FK UPH is dedicated to producing outstanding, competent, professional, and innovative doctors, who are committed to serving the community.
Why choose the Faculty of Medicine at UPH?
At FK UPH, students study medicine, public health, and healthcare services through an innovative, problem-based learning curriculum. Highly qualified lecturers and medical professionals provide students with solid medical knowledge. In addition, UPH partners with numerous private and public healthcare institutions. UPH also has its own teaching hospital, Siloam General Hospital, which gives students hands-on opportunities to apply their knowledge and further develop their clinical skills.
Specialist Doctor Education Programme (PPDS)
In January 2022, UPH’s Faculty of Medicine (FK UPH) became the first private university in Indonesia to open a Specialist Programme, namely the Radiology Specialist Doctor Education Programme (PPDS). How exciting is that! The duration of this programme is 3.5 years or seven semesters. Not only that, FK UPH also offers the Family Medicine Primary Care Specialist Doctor Education Programme (PPDS KKLP), which commenced on 2 March 2023. This programme is available for general practitioners who have worked for at least one year, hold an active medical practice licence (SIP), and are currently practising. The programme runs for seven semesters and is held at the FK UPH Lippo Village campus.
Medical Student Summer Enrichment Programme (MSSEP)
FK UPH also offers the MSSEP, which provides students with the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills while serving communities both in Indonesia and abroad. This voluntary programme runs for 4–6 weeks during the holidays and is designed for students who wish to dedicate their time to community service. Through this programme, students cultivate essential qualities needed to become doctors, such as compassion, honesty, integrity, and social justice. More than just shaping doctors, MSSEP nurtures scholars, health advocates, collaborators, and future leaders.
UNGGUL Accreditation
FK UPH is committed to continually improving its curriculum, facilities, teaching staff, partnerships, and more. This dedication ensures that graduates are well-prepared and competent in their roles as young doctors. One clear proof of this commitment is the UNGGUL Accreditation awarded by the Indonesian Independent Accreditation Institute for Higher Education in Health (LAM-PTKes) to both the Bachelor of Medicine and Professional Doctor programmes at FK UPH on 8 April 2022.
Medical Science Group (MSG) Synergy
FK UPH is supported by the Medical Science Group (MSG) network, which consists of Siloam Hospitals, the private research centre Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN), and the Faculty of Health Sciences at UPH. This network provides students with a comprehensive and high-value learning experience, equipping them to become highly qualified and impactful doctors.
Comprehensive Facilities
To support academic activities, FK UPH is equipped with a wide range of facilities, including the Parasitology Laboratory, Biochemistry Laboratory, Anatomy Laboratory, Physiology and Pharmacology Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Injection Practice Room, Library, Anatomy Museum, and many more. Impressive, right?
UPH’s Teaching Hospital Partners
UPH collaborates with several teaching hospitals, including:

Students at UPH Faculty of Medicine (FK UPH) will study a wide range of subjects related to medicine for seven semesters (around four years). Some of the topics covered include:
The application of ethics in the medical field
The immune system and infections
The structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules
The relationship between nervous system responses and behaviour
The human reproductive system
Cancer and blood-related diseases

And many more.
After completing this phase, students will enter the professional programme (clinical clerkship/koas) in hospitals, lasting around 1.5 to 2 years. They will then be required to take the National Competency Examination for Medical Doctor Professional Programme (UKMPPD) to earn their doctor title. Following graduation, an internship of one year is mandatory before being eligible to practice medicine independently.
FK UPH students have made notable accomplishments, such as:
Overall champion at the Regional Medical Olympiad (RMO) 2017

Second place in the Cardio-Respiratory category at RMO 2019
Hosting the 2022 National Deans’ Forum of the Association of Indonesian Private Medical Faculties (Fordeknas AFKSI), attended by the Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin
Beyond becoming general practitioners, FK UPH graduates have broad career opportunities, including:

“During my studies, my organisational experience at UPH was very helpful. Beyond that, the most memorable aspect of UPH is its strong sense of family. For me, UPH is not just a campus—it is a home that nurtures future doctors, preparing competent and dedicated medical professionals,” – Dr. Vito.
The Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) presented two awards to Prof. Dr. Dr. dr. Eka Julianta Wahjoepramono, Sp.Bs., Ph.D., Dean of UPH Faculty of Medicine, on March 12, 2010, at UPH Karawaci.
He was recognised as the first Asian doctor to successfully remove a brainstem tumour in 2001.
Prof. Eka is also the first Indonesian doctor to deliver medical lectures (neurosurgery) at Harvard Medical School. In addition, he serves as the Chairman of the Neuroscience Center at Siloam Hospital, President-elect of the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons, Founder of the Indonesia Brain Foundation, and Founder of the World Academy of Neurosurgical Surgeons.
