For the Third Time, UPH Strengthens Group of Civil Engineering Professor.

Karawaci, Tangerang, 4 November 2019 – “Steel is important as a sign of the development of civilization. Presently, steel production is less popular compared to concrete construction. However, with the emerging of massive infrastructures, we need strong and economic infrastructures. For these purposes, using steel is a serious consideration that we must take,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Wiryanto Dewobroto, MT, in an open academic panel dedicated to his employment as a Civil Engineering Professor at UPH. The official enlistment of the professor was done on 4 November 2019 at Room D 501 at UPH Lippo Village campus.

According to Prof. Wiryanto, there lacks research and engineers focusing on steel structures. In reality, steel can be an advantageous construction material compared to concrete in aspects such as strength factor towards load and malleability/adaptability to environments at Indonesian regions. The structure of steel is relatively thinner than concrete, which causes problems with buckling, inducing the need for bracing or zero force elements. This is Prof. Wiryanto’s research focus, titled “Effect of Zero Force Elements on Steel Structures”.

Talking more about stability tests, Prof. Wiraynto, who specializes in steel structures, structural analysis, and computer engineering structures, is interested in using a new method called Direct Analysis Method (DAM) that accompanies an older method called Effective Length Method (ELM).

Prof. Wiryanto explained, “DAM is a new steel structure planning method that was found in the American Institute of Steel Construction of 2005, 2010, and 2016. This method is a method that uses computers as a prerequisite, of sorts, in planning. DAM is effective when used for swaying structures and is greatly benefited when adding zero force elements, which are mostly negligible in the old method.”

However, although the technology is available to make lives easier, Prof. Wiryanto emphasized the importance of not depending on computers to do the work because the results still depend on the engineer. Engineers are needed to control and evaluate proper structural planning.

Prof. Wiryanto emphasized, “As technologies get better, human resources must improve too.”

The open academic panel for the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Ir. Wiryanto Dewobroto, MT. is the 12th inauguration of UPH professors. With this, UPH has birthed three Professors in Civil Engineering, who are Prof. Dr-Ing Harianto Hardjasaputra, Prof. Dr. Manlian Ronald. A. Simanjuntak, ST., MT., D.Min., and Prof. Dr. Ir Wiryanto Dewobroto, MT.

In the inauguration, UPH Chancellor, Dr. (Hon) Jonathan L. Parapak, M.Eng.Sc., said that the inauguration is the embodiment of UPH’s vision and mission.

The Chancellor said as he opened the panel and welcomed attendees, “With Prof. Wiryanto’s hard work to find new and beneficial knowledge, he realizes knowledge development, faith in Christ, and good character, which are needed to contribute in building the nation.”

In addition, Dr. M. Samsuri, S.Pd., M.T., LLDIKTI Wilayah III Secretary, also expressed his appreciation.

Samsuri said, “Congratulations to Prof. Wiryanto in his inauguration as a professor. I hope this achievement will be a catalyst for lecturers to become professors. Congratulations to UPH because they birthed one of the best professors in Indonesia, especially in Civil Engineering.”

Prof. Wiryanto has joined Civil Engineering at UPH since 1998. He has released nine books, which have been used as textbooks in civil engineering courses at various universities. Prof. Wiryanto Dewobroto also had many contributions to research and scientific articles. His research has been published in reputable international journals. In addition, since 16 October 2018, Prof. Wiryanto was given a position in the Construction Safety Committee at the Ministry of PUPR (Public Works and Public Housing of the Republic of Indonesia). Recently, Prof. Wiryanto and his team have applied new DAM methods to track the cause of the Pacitan suspension bridge collapse.
