Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) strives to give opportunities to high school students to join UPH in various ways, including sports. Students with exceptional skills in sports have an opportunity to achieve UPH scholarship through a direct selection at the Sports Scholarship Tryout. The tryout was held on 7 December 2019 at UPH Lippo Village campus.

Andromeda, UPH Sports Department Manager, said, “The tryout was aimed to attract talents with similar vision and mission as UPH and the Sports Department. It is also to introduce what UPH Sports is like, from its values, trainers, and students who join as student-athletes.”

This is the first time the sports scholarship selection was held by the Marketing and Admissions Department in collaboration with the UPH Sports Department, in hopes of providing more opportunities for students to participate at UPH.

Phoa Denny Oswaldo, UPH Student Consultant Manager, said, “The usual scholarship giving is through talent scouting or competition, which can be limited. This allows some potential talents to be overlooked. Therefore, through the tryout at UPH, they can directly showcase their abilities.”

Before judging, around ninety participants who come from different schools received a direct message from the UPH Sports Director, Stephen Metcalfe. The message contains knowledge on how to become a student-athlete. The main thing that each student must have is the discipline in all aspects of life, as well as the willingness to make a sacrifice.

The tryout is open for Grade 12 students who are talented in five sports areas, which are basketball, soccer, futsal, badminton, and swimming. They will receive assessments from trainers in each area. Andro also added that to pass the selection process, students not only need academic talent and skill in sports, but also a good character.

With this activity, UPH hopes that participants will show their best skills and efforts and to understand the values emphasized by the UPH Sports Department. As a continuation of this activity, the participants who will continue to the next step will be announced. For students talented in sports and eager to join UPH, they are welcome to join as a student-athlete and to develop their sports talent, may that be through the regular or scholarship routes.
