UPH Master of Educational Technology Offers Flexibility in Further Studies for Leaders and Educators of the 4.0 Revolution Era and 5.0 Society.

The emergence of COVID-19 pandemic in many countries all over the world has impacted almost every sector of life, including education. This issue has become the attention of many educators and other figures in education, especially in terms of following post-pandemic changes in education. Learning from this situation, educators have no other choice than to have insight in technology-based education. Upon answering this need, Universitas Pelita Harapan Master of Educational Technology (MET UPH) decided to launch its Hybrid Learning Program.

MET UPH aims to produce educators who are capable of facing the 4.0 era and to change the society into a sustainable community or society 5.0. This new kind of society focuses on a life that incorporates modern science such as artificial intelligence, robot, and internet of things, to provide the needs of humanity. Through learning and practices, the students of MET UPH will experience the advancement of information technology which will lead them to, later on, design and implement this innovative learning model in school, other educational institutions, and Human Resources Development Institutes.

Hybrid Learning Program itself is a learning system designed to combine two learning models, online and offline. The main purpose is to facilitate students and to give students the opportunity to learn at their own speed and in times that can fit their packed schedule.

The combination of the MET and Hybrid Learning Program designed by UPH is the answer for educators and professionals in education who has a packed schedule and who can’t come to campus often. The Hybrid Learning Program of MET UPH has a number of advantages including quality technology-based learning, flexibility in integrating learning activities with student’s schedules, and the ease of access to learn according to their time availability and mobility. Therefore, this program is highly suitable for bachelors in education, education program planners, curriculum developers, and also Information and Technology, as well as Human Resource (HR) professionals in companies or institutions with a highly packed schedule.

The Hybrid Learning Program has a balanced system with 50% online and 50% offline learning for 36 credits. In the first and last week of a semester, students will follow offline learning on campus. Other than that, students will have to do online learning through an open-source-based Learning Management System (LMS) called Moodle that can be accessed through learn.uph.edu. LMS is a user-friendly system that will simplify learning for students. Despite online learning, the interaction, and relation aspect between students and lecturers, and between students themselves, are still a priority. At least once every three weeks, lecturers will do an online class using video conference.

In this 4.0 Industrial Revolution era, many people think that educators will be replaced by technology. Nevertheless, such a thing might just be impossible because educators are not just people who transfer knowledge, but individuals with integrity and character that will instill the core values of character development in students’ minds, including in terms of making a wise use out of the advancement of information technology. Therefore, the world needs educators who can adapt to changes through times.

Therefore, UPH established the Master of Educational Technology Program with Educational Leadership as one of its concentration as a means to support the purpose and direction of online learning in Indonesia.

“In order to prepare future educators to face the 4.0 era, we will still be focusing on the learning materials. However, we should also prepare for modern education including the mastering of technology, so that all materials can be delivered with modern approaches,” said Dr. Niko Sudibjo, S.Psi., M.A. – Head of Master of Educational Technology UPH.

Graduates of MET UPH are expected to acquire their main skill in developing instructional technology to anticipate future professions. This skill is highly important for these professions: (1) competent educators (e.g. instructors, teachers, and lecturers), (2) program planners, (3) critical and creative curriculum developers, (4) confident information and technology users, and (5) managers of training or educational institutions who are effective and efficient, especially in strategic planning.
