Architecture is one of the most popular majors in Indonesia due to its strong relevance in theory, practice, and career outlook. Unlike Civil Engineering, which focuses on the realization of structures, Architecture is about ideating, conceptualizing, and designing plans on paper for future development. Students in this major study the design and construction of buildings while considering the three key principles: firmitas (structural strength), venustas (aesthetic value), and utilitas (functionality).
As future building designers, Architecture students must develop strong design skills. In today’s digital era, most designs are created with the help of computers, making computer literacy and proficiency in design-related software essential. Additionally, a solid understanding of mathematics is crucial in the architectural design process. If you enjoy math, art, humanities, and technology, you’ll likely enjoy studying Architecture.
Are you interested in pursuing this field? Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) offers a well-rounded Architecture Program you should definitely consider. Let’s get to know the Architecture Program at UPH.
Offered under the Faculty of Design , the Architecture Program at UPH equips students with fundamental knowledge and architectural skills through an exploratory design approach—enabling them to respond to the ever-evolving technological and cultural landscape. Students will be trained with artistic, scientific, and humanistic perspectives on building design. This includes technical drawing and design skills in 2D and 3D formats, quantitative analysis, physics, social and environmental sciences, and up-to-date discourse and technologies—all grounded in core architectural knowledge.
In the first and second years, students are introduced to the humanistic aspects of architecture through the exploration of art and science. Learning activities include writing development, drawing exercises, visual design in 2D and 3D, model making, and theoretical thinking.
In the third and fourth years, students shift toward professional disciplines by exploring building systems and ergonomic needs. The curriculum includes programming design, application of materials and construction technologies, computational design, quantitative building analysis, and research on social and environmental impacts.
Here are some of the courses offered in the UPH Architecture Program:
Utility Systems for Buildings
Contemporary Architecture Theory
Modern Architecture Theory
Structural Systems in Architecture
Passive and Artificial Design Planning
Introduction to Urban Architecture
Simulation Methods and Computer-Based Design
Fundamentals of Architectural Professionalism
Introduction to Urban Design
Building Materials and Construction
