UPH Conducts an INFINITIC Event to Socialize Mathematics.

Indonesia society in general still assumes the field of Mathematics as a difficult numerology. This causes a lack of interest in Mathematics. For this reason, the Mathematics Study Program of University of Pelita Harapan (UPH) conducted an INFINITICS (Interminably Finding True Knowledge in Mathematics) event aimed at socializing Mathematics. In the other words, this event introduces Mathematics Study Program to public, specifically about the field of Actuarial science. This event firstly began in 2017 and in this year, the second time it was held, took a place on Thursday-Saturday, 25-27 October 2018 at Building D 501 UPH Lippo Village.

The series of INFINITICS 2 events consisted of seminars, competitions and workshops. The participants consisted of 144 high school students (high school) around Jabodetabek along with accompanying teachers for each school.

INFINITICS 2 presented a seminar with three alumni as the speakers. They are Daniel Winoto, Rheza Dwiputra Tamin, and Yoel Martinus Purwanto who now works in leading companies in the field, PricewaterhouseCoopers and CIAYO Corp. In addition to share their experience of being a student in Mathematics Study Program, the alumni also shared about the job opportunities of Mathematics Study Program graduates that are still wide open.

According to Kie Van Ivanky Saputra, Ph.D., the Department Chair of UPH Mathematics, this event was not only conducted to introduce Mathematics Study Program, but also specifically to introduce Actuarial science and Actuary professions, considering that there are still few Actuary professions in Indonesia.

“The trend of Mathematics graduates has undergone a change. It changes from what used to tend to work in a bank as an analyst, becoming an Actuary nowadays. In the future, it will probably change towards work around big data that leads to industry 4.0,” said Ivanky.

In addition to open the insights of the students about the fields of Mathematics and Actuarial profession, this event also provided a special workshop for teachers in Mathematics study who accompanied the students about Statistics which is packaged in the topic of Inference Statistics Based on Simulation and Randomization.

“This is important for teachers, so that in addition to accompany the participants in the competition, the teachers also got some additional information about the teaching process using the Statistics application,” said Laurencia Isabel, the Head of the INFINITICS 2 committee.

On the last day, the winners from three categories were announced.
