A Day With Math, A Fun Way to Introduce Mathematics to High Students with UPH.

In order to introduce High School students to mathematics, Actuarial and Applied Mathematics Program of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) held an event called “A Day with Math”, a creative and interactive event that introduces High School students to mathematics and which encourages them to apply maths in daily life as well as professional life.

The event was opened with a Talk Show on Actuarial and Data Science with professional practitioners as key speakers including Steven Tanner, FSAI – Actuary in PT Dayamandiri Dharmakonsilindo, Mourits Rompah – Actuary in PT Dayamandiri Dharmakonsilindo, and Setyven, S.Si., S.Kom – Head of Data Style Theory. The Talk Show discussed issues around mathematics major and the career perspectives of its graduates.

“Most people would think that mathematics graduates could only become lecturers or teachers. However, in this present day, mathematics graduates have a wide range of job perspectives, especially with the emergence of start ups. As an example, companies like Gojek, Kredivo, Tokopedia, and many more, are looking for data scientists. Aside from sata scientist, there is also a profession called actuary; a profession which promises high wages,” said Kie Van Ivanky Saputra, Ph.D – Head of Actuarial and Applied Mathematics UPH.

After the Talk Show, the faculty wanted to give these high school students a practical experience of mathematics. Thus, students were given the opportunity to follow a workshop in Actuarial and Data Science so they have a depiction of those two jobs.

A Treasure Hunt Booth was also created to give students the experience of learning while playing. Students were divided into nine groups with each member being from different High Schools. The winner of the Treasure Hunt Booth will get a 25% admission discount.

There was also an alumni sharing session with Earlitha Olivia Lionel – Actuary in AIA, who shared her experiences during her study in Mathematics UPH and the benefits she had gotten.

“Choosing Mathematics UPH was the right choice for me. They have this Actuarial Science club that enables its members to learn about actuarial science outside the class. In addition to that, the lecturers here really support me to start taking my actuarial tests since I was in university, so that I can complete all those tests now, when I am still 22 years old,” said Earlitha.

Following are testimonies from teachers and students:

Georgius Rocki – Mathematics Teacher (Atisa Dipamkara)
“This event is really great, and I am personally thrilled by it. It would really be great to have more events like this one. It is very useful for students, especially the 11th grade students, because they can get the idea of what a mathematics major really is, the job prospects, and many more. This event has helped my students to have a clearer picture of their future studies, especially those who are interested in mathematics,” he stated.

Kenny Haryanto – 11th Grade (Science, SMA Tarakanita Citra Raya)
“This event is really great! It’s really beneficial especially for us who like Maths. Through this event, I got to know that there are so many future prospects for a Mathematics graduate and that they are really needed in the industry. Before this event, I never thought that Mathematics graduates could be anything more than a lecturer or a teacher,” said Kenny.
