Biology is a field of study that explores the processes of life in living organisms at the molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological levels, as well as evolution or development, which includes behaviour, physiology, and genetics in both animals and plants. With the advancement of technology, biology is now applied in the production of goods or services that benefit humans. This branch of biology is called Biotechnology.
Biotechnology is a university programme that studies the utilisation of living organisms (fungi, viruses, bacteria, etc.) or products derived from living organisms (organic acids, alcohol, antibiotics, enzymes) in production processes to create goods and services useful to humans. In its development, biotechnology is built upon other applied and pure sciences, such as molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, mathematics, computer science, genetics, chemistry, and more. In short, biotechnology is an applied science that integrates various disciplines in the production of goods and services.
The Biotechnology programme at UPH equips students with both strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills through a learning approach focused on developing innovative products that improve quality of life. The courses offered prepare students to face various challenges in the health, food, and environmental industries in a professional manner. Students will gain hands-on experience working with organisms, cells, and molecules such as proteins, DNA, and RNA.
UPH provides a wide range of laboratory facilities to maximise students’ learning experience, using tools and technologies commonly applied in the biotech industry. Among the laboratories available in the Biotechnology department are:
Through these state-of-the-art facilities, students can focus their research in the field of medicine (e.g., fibrinolytic agents derived from microorganisms or plants, characterisation of lactic acid bacteria or other probiotics, as well as antimicrobial compounds) and in industry (e.g., decolourisation of textile dyes using microorganisms).
Our programme highlights the diverse applications of biotechnology, from personalised medicine and gene therapy to environmental management. In addition, the curriculum is designed to nurture independent learning, critical thinking, and soft skills, enabling students to solve real-world problems in the field of biotechnology.
In the first and second years, students will study the fundamentals of Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology. In the third year, they will explore specialised biotechnology applications to support their final project. In the fourth and final year, students will strengthen their knowledge through independent projects, internships, or independent studies, while also completing their thesis.
The Biotechnology programme at UPH collaborates closely with the Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN) and Siloam Hospitals. Located within the same academic and professional environment, this synergy provides students with easy access to research opportunities. With MRIN as one of Indonesia’s leading research institutions, biotechnology students at UPH are able to conduct research with professional standards.
