What Is a Food Technology?

Food Technology or Food Engineering is a major that studies the entire process of processing food materials, from raw ingredients into ready‑to‑consume food products that are safe, nutritious, and high in quality. In this major, students learn about the physical, chemical, and microbiological properties of food, as well as how technology is used to process, preserve, package, and distribute food. The focus of food technology is not only on taste, but also on food safety, nutritional value, shelf life, and quality standards that must be met before products reach consumers.

What Do You Study in a Food Technology Major?

In general, studying in a Food Technology major combines fundamental sciences such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry with applied sciences such as food chemistry, food microbiology, food processing technology, food safety and sanitation, and food industry management. Students learn how to design efficient production processes, choose the right preservation methods, test product quality, and understand food regulations and standards. Through laboratory practicums and industry visits, Food Technology students are trained to see how complex the processes are behind everyday products such as UHT milk, instant noodles, packaged beverages, frozen food, and snack products.

Profile of the Food Technology Study Program at UPH

Under the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Food Technology Study Program (or Food Engineering) at UPH is designed to respond to the needs of the food and beverage (F&B) industry in the digital era. UPH Food Technology not only emphasizes mastery of food science and technology, but also equips students with business and entrepreneurship insights. Graduates of this program earn the degree of Sarjana Teknologi Pertanian (S.T.P., Bachelor of Agricultural Technology) and are prepared to play a role in ensuring food security, developing innovative food products, and managing food businesses that are relevant to current consumer trends.

The Food Technology curriculum at UPH offers two main concentrations. The Food Business and Entrepreneurship concentration focuses on developing future food entrepreneurs who are able to leverage technology to manage competitive F&B businesses. Students in this track still master technical competencies in food science, but are enriched with business skills, marketing, and the use of digital media. Meanwhile, the Food Processing and Innovation concentration emphasizes the development of food products through innovative processes and technologies, with special attention to food security, sustainability, production efficiency, and food waste reduction.

One of the main strengths of the Food Technology Program at UPH is its up‑to‑date learning materials that are relevant to technological developments and industry needs. The Food Technology curriculum at UPH is developed in accordance with national standards from the Indonesian Association of Food Technologists (PATPI) and refers to international standards from the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT, USA). In addition to Indonesian‑language classes, UPH also offers English‑medium classes that prepare students for careers in the global food industry. Students even have the opportunity to join a Dual Degree program with the University of Newcastle (UON), Australia, allowing them to earn two degrees at once: S.T.P. (Sarjana Teknologi Pangan) and BFSHN (Bachelor of Food Science and Human Nutrition).

In terms of facilities, the Food Technology Program at UPH is supported by comprehensive and modern laboratories, such as chemistry, microbiology, food quality control, food processing, and food research & innovation laboratories. Through various projects and practical activities, students are trained to develop food products that are not only nutritious, but also innovative in terms of concept, appearance, and texture. UPH consistently encourages student creativity through activities such as Food Explore, and actively involves them in national and regional competitions. The Food Technology Study Program at UPH has achieved various accomplishments, including representing Indonesia in the ASEAN‑level Food Quiz Bowl competition.

The network and quality of lecturers are also key strengths of UPH Food Technology. Students are guided by lecturers with experience in both academia and the food industry. For the Food Business & Entrepreneurship concentration, the program is supported by professional lecturers from UPH Business School as well as industry practitioners who understand the dynamics of the F&B business. The combination of a strong scientific foundation, practical experience in laboratories and industry, and character and work‑ethic development makes UPH Food Technology graduates well‑prepared to work in large companies or build their own businesses.

Career prospects for UPH Food Technology graduates are very diverse. They can work as quality control and quality assurance staff in food and beverage manufacturers, R&D staff developing new products, food consultants, entrepreneurs in the F&B sector, and in government agencies related to food supervision and regulation.
