Taking place at UPH Graduate Campus ? Plaza Semanggi, Ir. Sulistijo Sidarto Mulyo, MT ? Lecturer of UPH Master of Civil Engineering Program ? presented a seminar entitled ?Tantangan dan Harapan Industri Konstruksi di Indonesia? (Challenges and Expectations on Construction Industry in Indonesia). This imperative topic is to prepare for the upcoming era of globalization and free-trading to Indonesia, furthermore, the population, economy and investment growth are opening more opportunities in the construction industry. Unfortunately, these wonderful opportunities might have gone to waste because Indonesia construction industry is still considered not stable enough.
 
 On November 23, 2013, UPH Master of Civil Engineering Program (CEP) that is led by Prof. Dr. Manlian Ronald A. Simajuntak, ST., MT organized this seminar to address the construction issue in Indonesia. In front of 50 participants from CEP students as well as construction practitioners and consultants, Ir. Sulistijo explained the current condition, challenges and the opportunities in Indonesia construction industry bureaucracy.

According to him, the construction industry bureaucracy in Indonesia is still far from fulfilling the established vision and mission as a consequence of the persisting problems in the system. These problems are apparent where stake holders do not fully understand the sectors in construction, e.g. government sector and society sector. This circumstance is not without reasons in regards to the unclear and lack of transparency from Indonesia bureaucracy system. Moreover, the situation does not get any better since the support and improvement effort are so bare which finally lead up to the appearance of pseudo-parties (e.g. pseudo-contractors and pseudo-consultants) as well as severe corruption, collusion, and nepotism acts. As a result of no definite improvement on construction industry, the cost for construction in Indonesia become bloated and the construction market implementation is rendered ineffective.
 
Ultimately, managing the Indonesia construction market now becomes a challenge of its own. Ir. Sulistijo stated his opinion that collaboration between government research organizations and education institutions ? either private or state owned ? should be done to change the current gloom condition. The current construction world in Indonesia is in shortage of highly qualified human resources meanwhile the demand is getting higher year by year. Besides that, this collaboration also plays an important role so that consistent law enforcement, a thorough construction socialization as well as the establishment of supervisory and supporting organizations ? such as capitals and insurances ? could be given to any parties in the construction field.
 
Approaching the era of free-trading and AFTA that is getting nearer, Ir. Sulistijo believed that a safe, comfortable and orderly construction in Indonesia is a must. Moreover in the era of free-trading, innovation, solution, efficiency, and productivity will be the determining factors whether one could survive in a market with open competition. To achieve such goal, Ir. Sulistijo relayed a suggestion to improve the quality of education so that the human resource could respond to the market demands. (lau)
